Bush denies he was in shock over (9/11) attacks
Source: SMH

WASHINGTON: They were the seven minutes that, for some, came to define a presidency. On one side of the TV screen, a New York landmark was in flames after hijacked planes smashed into the World Trade Centre. On the other, George Bush sitting before a group of children looking like a startled rabbit, conveying a sense of paralysis, if not panic, after an aide told him of the attacks.

But Mr Bush says that anyone who thinks he was in shock that morning of September 11, 2001, has it wrong. He was trying not to create panic. ''My first reaction was anger. How dare they do this to America?'' Mr Bush told NBC News in an interview to be broadcast on Monday to coincide with the release of his memoirs.

''I made the decision not to jump up and create a chaotic scene, because right after … These are quick reflections, anger, duty to protect the country, and then all of a sudden the cell phones are ringing. Now, the noise (from reporters receiving calls about the attacks),'' he said. ''But it clarified to me that people were going to be watching my reaction. And I'd had enough experience as governor of Texas during some disasters to know that the reaction of the leader is essential in the first stage of any crisis.''

So he sits there like a dork?

Even after hearing the reaction of the citizenry to what appeared to be indifference or incompetence, he can't apologize for his initial performance? What a spoiled brat.

I can see where he didn't want to upset the children, but he had long enough to get up, excuse himself and shag out the door to see what was happening to his charge...the United States of America.

48. yes, isn't it amazing how they made GWB a hero with
absolutely doing fekkin nothing-from 9/11 to standing on the pile with a bullhorn to declaring "mission accomplished" with another costume on after lying the country in a war that has cost lives and money-and made Iran even more of a threat-of course SA is happy Saddam is gone. See how PR industry in this country is so damn dangerous-they made little boots into some kind of Texas cowboy image, fearful of horse, but damn can he clear brush. Then there's the sexy pilot image even though little boots has fought more with a bottle than a weapon. All fairytale PR, and the audience eats it up.

How many times has the media over and over again stated how little boots kept us safe? But, it's not true because 9/11 did happen on his watch and he had the warnings from other countries, Clinton's administration and the damn PDB report. Then, there's the anthrax attack--and how about Katrina. Did that keep the people safe in this country--the bungling response.

What I see is, with the help of a very complicit media--"true heroes are made into villains and villains are made into heroes." All for the sake of politics as usual (swift boat anyone) or to defame someone who has fought for the truth or for the people.

54. I can think of a few reasons.
1) The attacks were happening when he entered the classroom. They knew of the first strike already--even Bush admits that. There were reports that he was being asked about the attacks as he entered the building, but I haven't seen that confirmed. Even if only the first strike had happened, he knew the other planes had been hijacked, and it wouldn't take a genius to figure out what they were going to do.

2) They probably already had a response planned before the second strike, before he entered the room, so Bush probably didn't have anything else to add.

3) Bush wasn't really in control of anything, anyway. Card was just informing him of what Cheney and the others were doing. He probably started off saying "Don't react, but we're..."

His reaction looked like that of a spectator, not of someone expected to take charge, and the reactions of everyone else looked like they thought of him that way. It was his job to visit classrooms and stay out of the way.

Anyway, it wasn't like it was the worst thing that happened during his presidency. It wasn't like a pop star had insulted him.

My real belief of what happened: Bush was trying to provoke an attack so he could justify an invasion of Afghanistan, and maybe Iraq. He planned both attacks before he went into office, and spent the early part of his administration pulling back surveillance of Bin Laden and Al-Qaida, threatening the Taliban with invasion, and calling Iraq and Iran the "Axis of Evil" (along with North Korea). He even leaked their security assessment of first strike nukes against seven nations. He was trying to shake them up, so they'd pull off another USS Cole attack, or maybe another WTC bombing.

I think what they pulled off shocked him. I think when he was approaching the school he knew of the hijacking, and of the first plane hitting the building. He had a pretty good idea of what would happen with the other planes. He was terrified of being blamed, terrified of what was happening, and trying to remain calm so no one suspected him. He wasn't surprised, though. Most people, their first response when they are surprised is to try to do something--run, scream, jump up and take charge--not just to sit there. He wasn't surprised. He may not have expected it to be as bad, but he knew something was going to happen. So he didn't react, because his first thought wasn't "What do I do?" but "How can I not look guilty?"

His handlers didn't trust him to react properly. They rushed him out of there, then hid him on a plane all day, then made up stories about terrorists threatening him and having the terrorist codes--Cheney later admitted these were lies. He landed at a base in Alexandria, Louisiana, and taped a message in which he was clearly drunk and clearly distraught--you can see the red in his eyes and cheek, you can hear the over-precise pronunciations mixed with the occasional slurred word. He got on that plane, he sat there in terror, and he did what he had always done when he realized he was a tiny phony in a big world--he drank.

65. well, after 9/11 there was the immigration official on TV
who was interviewed and stated that those coming from SA, apparently were given less scrutiny by order of higher ups. He was interviewed, I believe, the day after 9/11 on TV.

Also, there are some who believe that the planes were highjacked on the ground and they knew before they took off, that they had been highjacked. Some argue that the destroyed tower tape proved it. And then there is those that believe the government confiscated all of the black boxes, instead of they couldn't find them or they were destroyed. No matter how bad the plane crash, how many black boxes are literally destroyed?

I don't know about all that's out there; however, I do question the official fairytale.

73. "Official fairytale?"
Half-remembered anonymous claims from people whose reliability and sanity you can't even know are hardly the basis for building a theory. It's like the people who think WTC7 was dynamited. They were covering that building all day, showing clips of the extensive damage to its base, and talking to building experts on every network who were theorizing it would collapse soon, but one official makes an ambigious comment about "pulling" the building, and some use that as conclusive proof it was dynamited. The official story has its gaps, but "fairy tale" needs to be reserved for the conspiracy theories.

I'm sure there is a lot we don't know. The black boxes might be in a vault somewhere. There have to be more tapes than we've heard, and more video footage than we've seen. There is no question BushCo kept secrets and manipulated evidence released to the public so that we'd be sure to form one opinion over another. I can imagine that the boxes weren't designed to survive the direct explosive impacts they were subjected to, but I can just as easily believe someone decided to classify them. I have some trouble believing that the passports of some of the hijackers were found in the wreckage (supposedly they were part of the debris that was propelled through the building and out the other side during impact, but it's still hard to believe). There is other evidence I have some trouble with. But the basics--that planes were hijacked and hit the buildings because our officials were too slow to react and too hesitant to shoot them down--are hard to deny.

My biggest problem is believing that they never thought to step up airport security, or run basic surveillance on known threats in the US, even after the constant warnings of that summer, and the very specific security memo of a month before the attacks. That's why I think they were trying to coax something into happening. They made no effort to stop anything. Clinton and Gore always stepped up airport security, for far lesser threats. Bush and his people were either the stupidest executives ever, or they wanted something to happen. Or both. I like to believe Bush was expecting something far smaller in scale, but the truth is that he just didn't care how big it was. IMHO.

The biggest complaint I have about the whole "Inside Job" theory is that it's just not necessary. We were being attacked all over the world. All we had to do was let down our guard, and Bush would have all the justification he needed. Why risk a complex inside job with a high rate of discovery when all the had to do was unlock the back door and close their eyes?

98. I don't read PNAC
I read a lot of timelines back then, but I don't remember how long he was at the school anymore.

As for the planes, they knew there were four hijacked planes, and they knew roughly where they were. The air traffic control system would have warned of any planes in the area not responding to commands. Plus, I don't know if you've ever been around a place a president plans a visit, but the security is intense. The start planning weeks or months out, they secure all buildings and businesses around the area for days, they check everyone coming in our out of the area with dogs, metal detectors, background checks, barricades, they have more guns and equipment than you would imagine on site, and they monitor the airways and flight patterns before showing up. They even have shoulder missiles to shoot down airborne threats, in a chest they carry with them.

So their first assumption would be that the school was secured, and the roads weren't. In an attack like that, they'd have feared ground assassins as much as another airliner, and you can spot airliners from a lot further away than someone with a rocket launcher aimed at a limo. So in their mindset, the school was safer than the roads until they had them secured.

104. That's dumb.
Just because a group benefits from something doesn't mean they planned it.

They knew there were four planes because those four planes went off course and stopped responding. Surely you know that. If you don't know that, they you don't really want to know what happened. Right? The air traffic control system monitors all commercial airliners continuously. They go from one zone to the next, report to each zone as the enter it, are tracked on radar and by radio, and fly along set patterns unless instructed by controllers not to. They can't tell why they lose contact with a plane, but they can tell something is wrong. They had ordered all planes down, and they could tell where the planes that weren't responding were.

108. Because they knew what planes were in the area.
They had radio contact, transponder contact, flight plans, etc. They had ordered all planes grounded so it was clear who wasn't obeying. If a plane had veered off course near the school they'd have shoved him into a limo and been ten miles away before the plane could get there. There's already a no-fly zone around the president at events like that, so it's not like there was a plane close enough to strike.

96. with all the warnings that were given
I agree with you--my first question was "why didn't they beef up security at the airports?" We already had security, and baggage check-all they had to do is do an alert. But, also, I remember Colleen Rowley, a FBI agent, they already suspected some of the hijackers. I believe that information was forwarded to her boss.

But, I also have a problem with the flight school. Directly after the event, here come the officials taking all information from the flight school-a school that is very suspect in its activities. They also confiscated immediately any and all cameras from various location--and it's downright amazing how quickly they knew the alleged hijackers. Maybe because they had been under surveillance in the first place?

101. I'm sure they were watching them. Like Timothy McVeigh, and hundreds of others.
They probably weren't watching them continuously, but I suspect they were monitoring their activities, at least some of them, and I'm sure they have a few hundred others they monitor all the time. After something happens, they round up the usual suspects, see who was in the area and who is missing, and put the rest together quickly. They started looking as soon as they heard about the hijackings, probably before the first plane hit the building. They don't tell us their secrets, so they make up stuff about coincidental breaks, like McVeigh's tag falling off his car and his subsequent routine arrest, when what really happened was an informant turned him in, and they made up something to protect the informant. With the 9-11 terrorists, they don't want to reveal why and how they were watching them--especially since they didn't stop them beforehand--so they find passports in the wreckage, cars at the airport, etc.

So they watch the flight school. They probably have an informant there. After the attack, they flood the flight school and sieze all the records that could lead them to the suspects or to further attacks, but also they get the records that could uncover their informant. None of it means they knew what was coming, it just means that when the planes were hijacked they pulled together all the random threads and came up with who could have done it.

Would he have sit there with a dumb look on his face? Would he have asked Andrew Card any questions, like "Where is she now?" or "What happened?" or "Is Laura with her?" Would he have excused himself to find out what happened to his child?

He's trying to rewrite history, but the tale of the tape is there for all to see. No response whatsoever to Andrew Card's message. The "deer in the headlights" look. His rapt attention to the children, even to the point of laughing. All while on the other side of the split screen we see the most horrific attack on American soil, people jumping to their deaths rather than suffer the fire.

No, Dubya, we don't buy it.

What were your first words when you left the classroom? What actions did you take? History wants to know. Why did you continue with the preplanned photo-op, complete with a backdrop of students?

And BTW, where was the Secret Service while all this happened? POTUS is sitting for an hour in a known location at a scheduled time, and the SS lets him sit there like a duck when Air Force One is minutes away to whisk him away to safety, not to mention its communications and defense capabilities.

Why did you fly to Barksdale AFB, LA, and then to Minot AFB, ND, before slinking back to Washington?

From a debate with John Kerry: "What mistakes did you make during your first four years?" "Give me a couple of minutes and I'll think of one."

What a pathetic excuse for a human being, much less a president.

16. A very good point!
According to Bush, Card whispered in his ear "a 2nd plane has hit the towers, America is under attack". But, if you watch the video, Card must have been speaking 100 times faster than normal, to get all of those syllables out in such a short interval.

Whatever Card really said, it wasn't that!

17. Secret Service reaction -- BINGO!
If it had been a real attack they would have been in classroom so fast it would have made your head spin. They'd have jumped him and whisked him to safety, reaction of the little kids be damned. In addition, he traveled with a contingent of anti-aircraft guns that day. Hmmm...why would he do that? Just look at the profit motive for your answer.

The country was under attack and the President was sitting in an elementary school classroom. What, exactly, does it take for the Secret Service to jump in an protect the president? Unless they know he really doesn't need protecting?

74. Maybe not let into it...
Or at least not all of them.

Maybe they were rushing in when someone in authority told them to stand down.

Or maybe just the head agent knew.

I agree, when you start to consider the thought that "they were in on it", you start getting to too many people being "in the know" for a secret operation. However, I find it even more unlikely that with the confusion of the US under attack, the POTUS in a known, non-secure location, and the Secret Service did -nothing-?

What president would do that? But you certainly don't sit there as if paralysis has just set in for 7 minutes. Does it take that long to come up with an excuse for departure? Sorry it looked to me as if Card was delivering a progress report. Card did not wait for any response but simply backed away. Bush had no facial reaction to Card upon hearing we're under attack. Very odd reaction from my human experiences. Now either Card did not tell him but simply relayed his
presence was needed to attend a national emergency and Bush was told after leaving the room or he knew.

he made the comment of seeing the first plane crash and thought what a bad pilot before going into the classroom. Also, after he left the classroom, he wasn't immediately whisked away--I can't remember how long he stayed-but for someone who may be an imminent danger, he seemed not to be in a rush.

Also, I remember reading that he met with some CEOs after flying around and landing at an air force base. I wonder if that is true and why he'd immediately meet with corporate heads.

But so much is still not known by the general public. In the dvd 9/11 Press for Truth by the wives of some of the famous victims, they had a recount by one exec who had gone into work in on the WTC building to find the electricity completely shut down. No security was on which was unprecedented. Strange men in work clothes were laying some kind of cable that he described as looking like phone lines. I still can't accept those buildings fell from structural damage at the top.
And yes I agree..for a president he displayed some odd behavior during such eminent danger.

His Presidential Daily Brief on August 9 mentioned the use of airplanes to attack buildings. He summarily informed his briefer that they covered their ass.

None of this is complicated, ironic, or surprising. GWB is telling the honest truth. He was briefed, he knew about the threat, and was not surprised when it finally happened.

46. When you look at the series of photos,
and they should be rerun on a regular basis so people will remember what he looked like and what he did -
what I see is a glazed look at the reaction, a huge under reaction considering what he had been told, and what that meant in the context of his position as Commander In Chief, of what has just happened and then the look of a man who is realizing "And so it has has begun, there is now no turning back."

Bush shows neither surprise or horror, he doesn't even take the time to question whether what he is hearing is accurate or to ask what is being done about it. Because he already knew the answers to those questions. he did not take command because he knew others were in command.

Get out you psych 101 text and look up what the facial and body reaction to shock are and see if you find any of those reaction in Bush's face and posture. He was not surprised or shocked. He was passive, unmoved, incurious, and unemotionally unreactive, When he returned to reading his voice was not altered his hands did not shake there was no tension in this voice. He was off his rhythm a bit but that was all. An act of war had been committed against his country and he was basically unmoved.

This is the same man who is so insecure and nervous that he wore varying amounts of body armor and even Frankenstein suits and Frankenstein shoes for 8 years. And yet he was unmoved when an act of war was perpetrated against his country.

53. Amazing how not one damn journalist in the MSM has ever
questioned his competency as president that day in that moment. As someone who lived through the Cold War with the threat of nuclear missile attack it was thought a president may only have minutes or even seconds to respond to an attack on the U.S. Yet this doofus sat there for 7+ minutes while this country was under attack. Even if he was only needed to give a shoot down order his leadership was needed at that point. And it was more inexcusable in light of the Aug 6th PDB & other the all "flashing red" warnings that summer. This wasn't a f'ing tornado, hurricane, fire or flood doofus boy! You were the president of the U.S. you fool, not the president of the school board!

And even Katrina proved you could not handle a national disaster "W" where it took you near a week to react. You sat there on a Sunday getting a warning about Katrina that read like the script of a disaster movie it was so horrible, yet you could not even bother to fly back to D.C. and instead kept your damn West Coast photo op schedule while Americans died or had to survive the most horrible wretched conditions in the Superdome, convention center or trapped in the attics and on the roofs of their flooded homes.

Now imagine if Obama or any Dem president had reacted in such a fashion. The MSM would've never let this go. They would've allowed themselves to be driven by the howling of Faux, Limpballs, Beck, Palin, and the entire Repuke party to condemnation & questioning of competency. They'd already be drawing up impeachment papers.

"But, in order to unleash their foreign/military campaigns without taking all sorts of flak from the traditional wing of the conservative GOP -- which was more isolationist, more opposed to expanding the role of the federal government, more opposed to military adventurism abroad -- they needed a context that would permit them free rein. The events of 9/11 rode to their rescue. (In one of their major reports, written in 2000, they noted that "the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event -- like a new Pearl Harbor.")
