"Frist, Hastert Call for Leak Probe"
<snip>

"If accurate, such an egregious disclosure could have long-term and far-reaching damaging and dangerous consequences, and will imperil our efforts to protect the American people and our homeland from terrorist attacks," Frist and Hastert said in a letter.

<snip>

The Washington Post reported a week ago on the existence of secret U.S. prisons in Eastern Europe for terrorism suspects. The Bush administration has neither confirmed nor denied that report.

Frist and Hastert said the joint probe by the House and Senate intelligence committees should determine who leaked the information and under what authority.

"What is the actual and potential damage done to the national security of the United States and our partners in the global war on terror?" the letter asked. "We will consider other changes to this mandate based on your recommendations."

<snip>

QUESTION: Change of subject. Yesterday, I asked you about the Amnesty International's statements about a Yemeni man.

MR. ERELI: Yeah. I don't have anything for you on it, Saul, because my understanding is that we continue to talk about the same issue, which is -- same issue, which is secret detention centers, and I don't have any comment on those.

QUESTION: Okay. The question is, ignoring the part about secret detentions, they're in custody in Yemen. Are there any -- and people know they're in custody. The Yemeni Government acknowledges that. Are there any U.S. conditions attached to their imprisonment; i.e., have you got some kind of deal with the Yemeni Government?

MR. ERELI: Not that I'm aware of.

QUESTION: Okay. Because that's one thing that Amnesty International asked that you clarify. And the other thing is, can you say where they were detained before they went to --

MR. ERELI: I don't have that -- I don't have that information for you.

QUESTION: Okay. But as you said, this is about secret prisons so why don't I ask you generally about secret prisons.

MR. ERELI: We're going to do that again?

QUESTION: Yes, please. Is it true that Secretary Rice, since the report in The Washington Post about the secret prisons, has not made herself available to ask -- answer any questions by the media?

MR. ERELI: What are you talking about?

QUESTION: I'm saying: Has the Secretary answered any questions by the media since that report?

MR. ERELI: Since which report?

QUESTION: Since the report in The Washington Post about the secret prisons.

MR. ERELI: Not that I'm -- she's done no public appearances before the media since then.

QUESTION: Is there a connection?

MR. ERELI: No.

QUESTION: Are you -- she usually comes out, you know, once or twice a week. She's got several visitors today.

MR. ERELI: I think she's coming down today.

QUESTION: Oh, so will she take questions today?

MR. ERELI: The subject is of the International Religious Freedom Report.

QUESTION: Will she take questions from the media?

MR. ERELI: That's not the plan.

QUESTION: That's not the plan?

MR. ERELI: Uh-uh.

QUESTION: Okay. If I could just follow up on that, Adam. I mean, I think Saul is right. We've had, I think, five bilaterals today. All are closed press. It leads one to believe that for some reason the Secretary might be ducking us --

MR. ERELI: I think there's -- let's be clear.

QUESTION: Okay.

MR. ERELI: I mean, this -- if you look at the -- especially when on foreign travel, if you look at the number events and the accessibility of this Secretary to the press, it is -- I'm willing to wager in the short time she's been in this position -- unprecedented in terms of the amount of time she spends with you and the amount of time she talks with you and the efforts that we take in Public Affairs to make the Secretary and senior officials of this Department available.

Now, if you look over the course of the last two days which we're talking about and say you've done nothing to put out senior officials on this issue, I don't think that's a fair point to make, number one.

Number two, what we do in the future, press events in the future, she will be obviously, as always, meeting with different members of the press. But whether we decide to do a big event or a small event, I don't think should be seen as any reflection on accessibility and availability because that -- on that I think the record is clear and compelling. And so I reject categorically any suggestion that we are anything less than available in an unprecedented way.

QUESTION: Could I follow up on that, please? Okay. Two remarks. One is that were you aware the last time that there was a walk-up news conference with the Secretary and a visiting dignitary --

MR. ERELI: I don't think that's the measure of -- that should not be the measure of availability.

QUESTION: It was July 5th, Adam. It was July 5th.

MR. ERELI: That should not be the measure of availability.

QUESTION: (inaudible) -- if I can ask the question. The question is: Will the Secretary respond to the words that were attributed to her in The Washington Post about --

MR. ERELI: I think the response was made by me yesterday and that's sufficient.

QUESTION: Adam, I think, you know, when you lay down that bet, you're probably right. The Secretary has been --

MR. ERELI: Good.

QUESTION: -- has been so accessible that therefore it becomes noteworthy when she suddenly --

MR. ERELI: When there are two days that go by that she doesn't give a public event?

QUESTION: Why are you saying only two days? Why are you saying only two days?

MR. ERELI: Because you're talking about since the report came out. Since the report came out, which was yesterday, and today, you're saying there hasn't been a public --

QUESTION: I think you're wrong there, Adam.

MR. ERELI: No. She said The Washington Post report.

QUESTION: I said The Washington Post.

MR. ERELI: Yeah. Since The Washington Post report.

QUESTION: On the prisons.

QUESTION: On the secret prisons, yeah.

MR. ERELI: Yeah. Yeah, which was yesterday.

QUESTION: No, no. It's --

QUESTION: One week ago.

MR. ERELI: No, no. This is the report that was in the --

QUESTION: You talked to --

QUESTION: There were two.

QUESTION: You briefed yesterday. We've had the go-around with Sean on this --

MR. ERELI: I thought we were talking about the one yesterday.

QUESTION: -- several times. We've been stonewalled on this about the CIA thing. I think we're talking about at least several days, if not a week. And it's an unusual period for the Secretary not to be available.

24. Heh. It was common knowlege heard on the cocktail circuit in DC I'm sure.
Just like Valerie Plame's occupation. :sarcasm: Leaking classified info, as these guys told us before, is no big deal. So far Rove did it, lied about it and is still deputy WH chief of staff with his security clearance. Blowing the cover of an operative and operations regarding the tracking and monitoring of WMD posed no threat to US national security, these same bozos would have us believe.

Distract and divert. Extaordinary rendition, torture and the "flawed intel" therefrom is a known fact. The US has many hidey holes around the world for this practice. WaPo didn't let the cat out of the bag on this. It was already out there.

Frist and Hastert, two names we hope to see coming to a legal docket soon.

home; a complete repudiation of lies and the fraud that took us to war and a complete repudiation of the tactics and strategy used to conduct it. Any discussion of continuing this war ratifies and protects the GOP and their dispicable lack of character and leadership. At some point the Democratic Party Leadership needs to see how their support for staying in Iraq protects not only the NeoCONS but the entire GOP apparatus that seeks to define parties as rulers rather than a mechanism for the implementation of the will of the people. We are allowing both parties to rediscover and implement the tyranny of the Nazis and the Bolsheviks.

I support all the efforts to use the law to uncover their illegal tactics and criminal behavior and to hold them accountable for their malfeasance and abuse of power. But supporting their program for Iraq provides Frist and Hastert with just enough cover that they can get away with this kind of ridiculous nonsense. The war is their cover - deny it to them.

but we have laws. What they are saying is that someone is breaking the law and a 'whistleblower', which is entirely different to a leaker, has reported the crime. Whistle-blowers are protected by law.

Has anyone asked these two clowns if they know the laws of this country, or that we are signed on to the Geneva Conventions, which means if such 'rendering' is going on, we are in violation of our own and of International Law?

For a brief moment of insanity, I actually thought they might be finally representing us properly, and asking for an investigation into the actual crime that has been reported. That the US has sunk this low, as low as the countries we condemn, does not seem to bother these idiots at all. How long more before Frist is indicted, and Haster for his Abramoff connections? THIS is torture!! Constantly having to deal with their insanity!

I heard this on the radio and really had difficulty believing what I had just heard. The same people who steadfastly refuse to investigate the lies that got us into war, and act like blowing Plame's cover was no big deal, now want to investigate good journalism. They don't want to investigate the U.S. operating torture centers around the world, they want to investigate how the news got out. Their brazen hypocrisy knows no bounds.

If true, it would seem that this "leak probe" is a smokescreen designed to go absolutely NOWHERE, but launched with the hope that going through the motions might deflect attention from everything else that is going catastrophically wrong for Bush and, ergo, the GOP -- to wit, Iraq, Libby & Plamegate, Meiers, Frist, DeLay, et al.

Frist stabbed Lott in the back over the Thurmand scandal, so I see this as some payback from Lott.

77. I don't think their audience is the American people primarily, but the
media. The media will cover it, pushing those other investigations with unpleasant headlines and criticisms aside as they turn to chew on the latest story. And the noise machine goes on.

Note that the American public, according to contemporary polls, wasn't wildly in favor of invading Iraq. In fact, IIRC, it was predominantly against starting a war. The American public's views didn't matter.

I think in part Frist/Hastert's move is an attempt to control the story the media is focused on. And also again a surrogate Administration attack on the CIA elements and others in the intel community that do not fall in line behind the Administration. Darth gave Roberts marching orders before we know to stifle investigations. Wonder if he's also behind this Republican sudden interest in defending classified info and investigating leaks? It's a twofer for the administration. But inevitably it also places more focus on the existence of US gulags and the subject of torture. Which maybe still keeps a story they don't want front and center.

Hopefully this is another Administration miscalculation.

leak, were they? Did I just miss their jumping on that right away???

So CIA agents are "fair game," to borrow a phrase; CIA gulags are not. Wonder if this reporter is going to have to testify or go to jail??

And doesn't this reveal a picture of a CIA in great inner turmoil, or internal war?

75. Strange use of the word "leak"

What was "leaked" was the EXISTANCE of secret U.S. prisons
(that btw the Bush administration has not confirmed) for
terrorism SUSPECTS. Not exactly a blueprint for springing
KNOWN terrorists from prison, is it?

They make ridiculous claims, one wrapped up as a so-called "question" and the right-wing media simply parrots their spin.

Disgusting.

85. A painfully obvious distraction ploy ...
Frist and Hastert want investigate the "leak" of this so-called "classified" info to the press - not the legality of the CIA maintaining secret torture prisons in the first place.

This is obviously payback for the Plame/Libby affair. The Republicans, in their infinite wisdom, are playing tit-for-tat with the Democrats. You got one of our guys indicted (wrongly indicted, by God!) so we're going to stir up the shit for your people.
Anger over a White House official leaking the name of a covert CIA operative is a politically-motivated tempest-in-a-teapot, but leaking the existence of secret (illegal) CIA death camps is a SERIOUS OFFENSE and BREACH of NATIONAL SECURITY.

The hypocrisy stinks worse than a skunk on a scary night ...

93. CIA investigating... (BBC):
BBC: CIA prisons leak 'to be probed':
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4419960.stm
Wednesday, 9 November 2005, 04:16 GMT

<snip>

The US Central Intelligence Agency has taken the first step toward a criminal inquiry into who told the media that it runs secret jails abroad, reports say.

The investigation will examine possible leak of classified information, unnamed officials are quoted as saying.

...

The Bush administration has so far refused to comment on the allegations.

On Tuesday Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice averted questions on the issue, saying only that the US was in a "different kind of war" and had an obligation to defend itself.

The BBC's Fergal Parkinson in Washington says the repeated refusal by the administration to confirm or deny the reports has fuelled speculation that the secret prisons do exist.

Not very smart of them. The more "investigative" the environment becomes, the bigger fish get more attention. And, as Speaker and Prez Pro Temp, they're a couple of pretty big fish. Best strategy might be to just shut up.
