12. No sh*t. Around DC, you're not getting anything for that either.
You can't even get a 1 BR condo in a bad neighborhood for that.

60. Yes, but you could get
a cardboard box in DC for that! Maybe even a refridgerator sized one!
But if you want the delux family sized mayonaise jar bathroom then you're talking at least $200,000.

19. One of the reasons we moved from the Sacto area to Seattle..
Now, if you are willing to commute out, or are lucky enough to be able to telecommute out you can still touch a decent house for less then 300k.

We are simply priced out of the CA market.. and when I say market, I pretty much mean the whole freaking state.

3 properties for 175,000. One is a 1/2 acre lot. The other two are 2 bedroom 1 bath apartments that have been converted into condos and put up for sale.

6. Hey, it's a fixer!
Actually, as a Seattle resident, I will confirm home prices are out of reach for most people.

I own a small house, but only because the woman selling it was in a rush and understimated what the market would bear, so she sold it to me off market.

I live just north of Seattle, and while I certainly am enjoying a significant increase in the equity of my home, your picture does not jive with ANYTHING relevant to the market here. If this is a true pic/price, please post the link so I can see it for myself.

I was seaching the MLS listings today. I'm selling my downtown condo and trying to buy a house.

That gem is MLS# 25140376 (you can search for it on any local real estate site. i found it on www.themlsonline.com), located within city limits on SW 1st Ave on a 1/10th acre lot

The description is at least honest: "House Is A Hazard. Fixer Home Or Possible Rehab."

(edited for spelling)

22. Well, people could come here and maroon up this red area...
$175,000 will buy you a very nice house indeed. This one (I picked at random from the realtor.com website) you could get for less than $175,000 - if you had that money free, you could buy the house and put a car in the garage.

Greensboro itself isn't very red (Democratic city council) but outside the city is very scarlet indeed. They might even take $155,00 for it ($20,000 for a nice used car?)

Thats why I sorta like the midwest, houses don't cost much, but again, the pool for good jobs, are pretty limited. I'm in SW Missouri and my wife and I got a three bedroom, ranch style house, with a two car carport, a well house, and five acres of land for 75,000 bucks, it was a deal, and we were blessed/fortunate to get it. But, 175,000 for that, it might be tempting...:) It would mean i'm a bit closer to my Mariners...:)

47. No Missouri in me...:)
I'm from SE Alaska, about an hour and fifteen minute flight to Sea/Tac. My father was born raised in Everett, and moved up to SE Alaska. Alaska has no offical pro teams, plus my dad is a big seattle based fan, the M's, the Seahawks, and Sonics. I have been out in SW Missouri for over 2 yrs now, married...my wife is from this area, works in Bentonville for the Walmarts home offices...thats the short short of why i'm in missouri...and why, i'm a Mariners fan...but with the M's nowadays, all the M's i watched growing up, are all gone...with Edgar retiring, he was the last M from the team i started watching in 88. Edgar, Buhner...Norm Charleton, man, i miss those guys...but oh well, i'm riding the Ichiro, Sexton wagon now, just hope the M's get some good starting pitching and that Joel Pinerio, and Ryan Franklin come around, they were suppose to be qualified starters, but have failed to prove consistency.

63. I bought a goth 3-bedroom victorian in Iowa for $110,000
On 1.3 acres, with two outbuildings. I moved here from Seattle, and for 110k in Seattle, I could have bought a steel shed on 1/16 of an acre. I wanted to go back to Seattle, but I'm just going to live there part-time, for good, now.

It's very sad. I have tons of friends in Seattle that have little hope of owning their own homes. Homeowning is very cool. You get to paint the walls!!!

then the buyer can pay $8000 a year in property taxes if its moved to a quarter acre lot next to an abandoned factory.

i searched for houses in my town for $175k abd found a mobile home on a leased lot for $34k in the next town over and a seniors only assisted living apartment for $550 a month and $35k down.

Quick overview of some of the highlights. By the way, statistically, we actually have more sunny days than Seattle...not by much, though...and we get snow in the winter. But the houses are incredibly reasonable, cheap even, when compared with other cities.

At least it did 5 years ago. Now, it would probably go for at least $125,000. Still a bargain in comparison.

Four bedrooms, 2 and 1/2 baths, 2 kitchens (one large country kitchen), large studio, full basement, fireplace, wood floors, 3 brick garage bays.

Built in 1891 and still has some of the original fabulous light fixtures.

65. In my neck of the woods (NE Texas)
$175,000

I think it's hideous, but it's better than that first post, even at that.

83. How would you get the cobwebs off the ceiling in that?
Who the Hell needs a roof that high? Does it snow in NE Texas, cuz you can sure ski off of it? It looks like a witch's hat.

87. Yeah, don't get me started on the ridiculously high roof pitches
This started to get really popular about 15 years ago, I guess, though they were steep before that - but not like this. And, no we don't get snow. Maybe like two flurries a year, lucky if they stick. It can get cold, but it's no winter wonderland around here. RIGHT NOW, for instance, on November the freaking 9th, it's 83 degrees at 5:30pm and HUMID.

ick, ick, ick.

If you think the exterior is bad, you should see what passes for stylish interior decorating around here. GAG. Let's just say the adjective 'cute' is usually in play to show appreciation for an especially nice country kitchen.

84. Here's the drawback anywhere
what are the property taxes and insurances? The new assessment on the house can take it out of the affordable range.
