Eli sends Daddy Manning to San Diego to tell them that he wants to play for the Giants, not the Chargers.
Memo to Eli: In the NFL draft, the teams draft the players, not vice versa.

21. And Desmond Howard (?) |
|
Who went to the CFL to avoid playing for a team that drafted him.
And JD Drew (Baseball) who just sat out and got re-drafted the next year by the Cards.

|
He was drafted by the Redskins and then they wouldn't play him. When he joined the team, they had won a Super Bowl and had Mark Rypien as their QB. I thought that combination would be deadly, instead, the Skins totally SQUANDERED all that talent.

Elway had a choice and said he would chose baseball over football. Baby Manning has no choice. I am very disappointed his old man would even go for him. Somehow that is not the Brady or Delhomme team spirit attitude.

They have so many other holes to fill -- like giving Brees someone to throw to, for example. Manning would be a waste.

|
Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 11:33 AM by mouse7
Bad.
They have Tomlinson. They need to get the offensive linemen to block for Tomlinson, or they will lose Tomlinson.
San Diego will probably end up getting Mike Williams in the supplemental draft, too.
They should fill those three holes this year and pick up the QB next year.

Sure, I would love to see San Diego trade down to get someone like Rivers or Roethlisberger.
That is, trade down with CLEVELAND. Then we'll see how happy Eli is, when he's in a BROWNS uniform.

I am not a Kentucky fan. In fact, I'm a Florida Gator. After 4 years of watching him QB the Wildcats, I am a huge Jared Lorenzen fan.
Nobody tackles him solo. He throws at the last minute. He is such a different QB than any other QB I've ever seen, it's fascinating to watch. He doesn't scramble like Mike Vick, it's more of a "shove somebody out of the way and move over a few yards to buy an extra 5 seconds".
Whatever team gets Jared Lorenzen, I will become a fan of that team and buy his rookie jersey (once I determine he won't be traded). Look out for the Hefty Lefty!

And then trade him to the Giants for a bunch of draft picks, money or players they need.
But then again, this is the Chargers we're talking about.

Now that NYG knows Manning wants to go to them, they won't give jack to the Chargers in return. They're better off trading the #1 to someone else, fucking over both Manning and the Giants, drafting Phillip Rivers or Ben Roethlisberger a little lower, and getting full value out of the #1 pick.

You will NEVER win a Super Bowl with him. That "pedigree" is only good during the regular season. The Mannings have absolutely ZERO leadership qualities, which is why they fold like a chair against teams that actually have playoff caliber defenses (read: NOT Denver or KC in 2003).

19. Latest Pats draft-day rumor... |
|
This one came from Pete Prisco this morning. Sounds pretty wild to me.
First, NE trades its 32nd & 63rd overall picks to Miami, for the Dolphins 20th overall.
Then, NE trades its 20th & 21st picks to Washington, for the Redskins 5th overall.
Then, NE uses the #5 pick to grab either DeAngelo Hall (VA Tech, CB) or Sean Taylor (Miami, S), making Ty Law trade bait.
It just doesn't sound right to me: the Pats would be effectively trading both late 1st round picks and a late 2nd round pick to get a top 5 player. I wouldn't do it, but I've learned to trust Belichick and Pioli.

And I don't know if I like it either. Ty Law has been pissed for years and he still produces. Considering he's overpaid, we wouldn't get all that much in trade for him. I do like the idea of using the picks to move up, but I also like the idea of using the lower picks to bolster the offensive and defensive lines, as there are going to be some nice options available where they currently are (I also think this is the most likely scenario with Belicheck). I also think if they move up, they should snag one of these stud wide receivers that are out there. That's the one thing our offense is lacking right now.

18. Denver had the 4th best defense that year |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 11:59 AM by Champ
And shut down Peyton Manning in their first meeting. But Denver just made too many mistakes in that game, like not touching Marvin Harrison when he was on the ground. They had alot of quick passes and caught Denver's corners off guard for just a split second but that was enough to take it to the house. Plus it didn't help that Denver has weak corners which is why they got Champ Bailey(one of the best shut down corners, he can do everything Ty Law did in the AFC Championship game against Indy) and also resigned Kelly Herndon who played solid and would learn alot from Champ Bailey this offseason and carry it over to the regular season. Larry Coyer is an excellent defensive cordinater and runs one of the best defensive schemes in the league. Despite the fact Denver went almost the entire season without John Mobley, Daryl Gardener, and Ian Gold throughout the whole season and still finished #4 overall in total defense says alot. Now Kansas City's defense is a different story. You need much more then a great quarterback to win a championship though, it doesn't matter who the quarterback is.
on edit: How could I forget, Denver also picked up all pro safety John Lynch for a good price. Duh! *smacks his head*

Did you see the Green Bay game? They sat all their starters after the first quarter and it was close till the third or 4th quarter. The Broncos were 1 yard away from making it 10-17 but didn't convert with Danny Kanell behind center, then Ahman Green broke free for 98 yards and on the kickoff their backup return man fumbled and Green Bay took it for a touchdown viola it was 31-3. The Indy game, well they made too many mistakes they didn't make in the regular season. You seen the previous game where they shut down Peyton Manning, actually Denver was good. They almost beat New England with a third string quarterback and 7 other starters and 2 backups injured. They went the whole year with injuries which is why they sat out all their starters after the 1st or 2nd quarter of the Green Bay game and Sharpe, Smith, Plummer, and Portis didn't play a single snap.

Teams Denver beat with a winning record: KC and Indianapolis. Their record against teams above .500 was 2-5, 2-6 if you count the post-season. They were not a good team. They were a decent team in a crap division with a weak schedule. Sorry to burst your bubble!

I know you've got to have something in place for competitive balance, but when your reward for one of the best is going to one of the worst teams, I don't blame a kid for trying to escape it if he can.
I know a guy who turned down an offer of an NFL contract simply because he didn't want to play for the team that owned his rights. We're not talking Manning's recognition level or star power, but still I respected the hell out of him for doing that.

The irony is that Elway's refusal to play for the Baltimore Colts went a long way to bringing them to that point. :(
