Avocados: 2 for a buck here... |
|
Just had to rub it in a bit. The good part is, I don't have to share it. I sliced one whole avocado for my salad tonight -- with a homegrown tomato! This is the life, baby!

We normally pay 2 (aussie) bucks for a bag of 6 - 8 depending on size.
It's just so hard to not rub it in on those who are less avocado-endowed.
Mmmmm, no sharing of avo's, mmmmmmm
Enjoy

the only thing better would be having your own trees. I researched that -- they need to be planted in at least threes so they can pollinate each other -- there are boy and girl avocado trees.

We have six varieties now (I dig the holes, I have no idea what they are :-) But, when they eventually start to fruit there should be only two months of the year when we will be fruitless.
The bummer is, they take 7 years from seed to fruit, ours have another 2 to go.
Yay Avo's (yay sub-tropics)

while vacuuming.....just ask the UPS man.
My friend has a very prolific tree! I always have too many to eat and so make facials out of them...they are an awesome treat for skin that is on the dry side.
In my neighborhood we have a lot of lemon, lime, orange & avocado trees...that is the best part of living in the San Fernando Valley! If you can find an old neighborhood like ours that isn't completely cemented over yet that is.

There's a place right next to my work. It's a sandwich shop owned by greeks (I think) and they make these KILLER baked potatoes. They make one they call the "Chicken Spud" and put wonderfully grilled chicken, sauteed onions, mushrooms, and peppers, and 3 cheeses, butter, and sour cream. Then they top it off with an entire avocado.
I try to only eat one a month, but it's the best lunch of the month!

reminds me a place we used to go to lunch. They had a sandwich called the "Smokin' Roman." It was made on rosemary focaccia bread with real sliced turkey, cheese, tomatoes, avocado, and bacon. Damn I loved that sammich!

Eat strawberries, then drink some cold milk. The milk will taste incredibly sweet in contrast to the ascorbic acid in the strawberries. It's a really nice low-fat treat.

I just recently went on vacation to Mexico and had something I'd never heard of: avocado pie.
Sounds weird, right? It was similar to pumpkin pie...sweet and cinnamon-y with a graham-cracker crust. Amazing and delicious.
I didn't think it was possible to love avocados more than I already did, but I was proven wrong.

That's really what I was expecting (everyone I tell thinks that), but it was completely unlike the avocado taste and texture you're thinking of.
We asked the waiter for the recipe, but he told us that he'd have to kill us if he told us, then laughed and walked away. :)
I have searched for a similar recipe online and in cookbooks, but haven't had any luck as yet.

Do you just have one? What about the pollination issue? I read you need to have at least three. If that isn't true, I may just plant some after all. Free would be so totally awesome!
on edit: Make that avocado green with envy!

27. nope, just one tree that I grew from a pit years ago |
|
there are other trees in the neighborhood so I don't know if that has anything to do with it but it took about ten years before it really began yeilding good fruit.

Maybe I'll grow this pit then. And the next one. Some people worry about their neighborhood pets procreating... guess you hope your neighborhood trees get together.
One can never have enough avocados!

38. Don't need 3, but better to buy one than the pit... |
|
As I understand it, you don't need more than one avocado to produce, but conditions do have to be right. Growing trees from pits can give mixed results. I planted one in my parent's yard when I was a kid and it's huge now, but has never grown a single avocado, and they live in Carpinteria, the Avocado capital of the world (or so they say).
I did a significant amount of research recently as I'm trying to grow some in my back yard. We'll see how they do. I bought and planted a Hass and a fuerte in the ground near each other as well as a "little cado" in a planter nearby. There are two types A and B. The Hass is an A and the Fuerte is a B. I think they're more productive if you plant one of each. But they all came labeled "self fertile", and I asked explicitly.
Anyway, they run about $30 for a 5 gallon tree. If anyone has any more advice I'd love to hear it. I considering asking a general Avo tree growth question anyway...

40. I think my sources said... |
|
3 to 5 years for fruit from a nursery tree, and 8 to 12 from a seed. I may be slightly off, though, but a good tree is probably a better deal and you don't risk as much of a genetic lotto as with a seed.
And I've been told time and time again not to buy a bigger one - stick with 5 gallons as they're more apt to adapt well to your soil than one that's established itself better in a container in a nursery.
I bought my little cado through Cliffton's online nursery for $50 plus $25 shipping 'cause I didn't think I'd be able to find a dwarf anywhere locally. Stupid stupid stupid. Within a week I found them at three separate nurseries, though the Cliffton one looked better than most of these. I live in Santa Barbara county, so there are lots of avocado trees around. My town (Lompoc) is very windy, though, and I hear they don't fruit so well in windy areas. We shall see...

has to do with whether the tree opens its flowers in the morning or in the evening, as I understand it. It's less about what "sex" the trees are, I think.

Although truth be told, I don't know that there was any milk in it. Thick and luscious with that mouth feel that only avocodo fat can deliver, not too sweet, with the slight crunch of ice crystals. The perfect desert after my Vietnamese noodle soup on a really hot California day.
