As I understand it, you don't need more than one avocado to produce, but conditions do have to be right. Growing trees from pits can give mixed results. I planted one in my parent's yard when I was a kid and it's huge now, but has never grown a single avocado, and they live in Carpinteria, the Avocado capital of the world (or so they say).

I did a significant amount of research recently as I'm trying to grow some in my back yard. We'll see how they do. I bought and planted a Hass and a fuerte in the ground near each other as well as a "little cado" in a planter nearby. There are two types A and B. The Hass is an A and the Fuerte is a B. I think they're more productive if you plant one of each. But they all came labeled "self fertile", and I asked explicitly.

Anyway, they run about $30 for a 5 gallon tree. If anyone has any more advice I'd love to hear it. I considering asking a general Avo tree growth question anyway...
