11. PBK snubbed me
Evidently a 3.72 GPA and graduation with high honors was not enough for them.

I remember this snub everytime my alma mater asks me for money.

We weren't part of the Greeks though. We were part of the Romans, the anti-Greeks. I was a Pershing Rifleman. Kinda the militant arm of the Romans. :)

9. I wouldn't call it "secret"
I was a founding member of my college's chapter of Kappa Kappa Si. Also a member of Phi Mu Alpha. (both music-related service frats). Phi Beta Kappa as well.

I guess I missed out on all the whacky whacky hijinks of social fraternity life. Then again, I missed out on the hazing, raping ,and drinking until you die.

15. I am an alumnus of TKE
Which includes Ronny Reagan, Sen. Robert Byrd, Elvis (honorary), and Merv Griffith among others (Dem and Repug). My wife had a 3.7 at the Phi Beta Kappa alpha chapter and didn't get in, she hates the social greeks, but still married me for some reason.

Where did you go to college at? All the Sigma Nu's I knew were all Army ROTC. Also, as I understand it, if you go to Va Military Institute you are an honorary Sigma Nu. I didn't know too many liberal Sigma Nu's. Just curious, maybe its a left coast right coast thing?

And the VMI story is not true. Several fraternities (including ATO) were founded there.

And chapters seem to vary a lot and develop their own personalities.

35. U of Washington
Our house was always "smart" people and not the popular folks, so I fit in there pretty well. I actually made a lot of good friends in my sorority, although at the time, I found a lot of it pretty annoying. I stay in touch with quite a few people, though.

36. In college during the height of the war (Oh, Vietnam. Sorry.) in our ...
....little college town, the mayor announced that the campus was "a hotbed of radicals" because the vast majority of students hated the war and filled the streets to demonstrate our feelings....several of us found this amusing. We'd write letters and editorials to the student paper all the time, but after the mayor did that we started signing them the "Hotbed of Radicals Collective" and leave our names off. Pretty soon a fair number of people, including the mayor, were under the impression that there was actually something called The Hotbed of Radicals Collective conducting underground subversive activities in town....

38. Masons and Mensa
Neither of which are actually "secret" societies. Most Masons are more than happy to let people know about their belonging, sometimes pasting Masonic symbols on their cars, or wearing rings with the Square and Compass emblem on it.

Membership in Mensa is secret only because nobody outside of it gives a damn about it.

Oh, and I went to AA meetings years ago, so I guess I'm a member of that one as well. AA isn't actually a secret organization either, just one that is very secretive as to the identity of the members.

I guess I think of "secret" societies as being somehow inimical in nature, like the folks that hang out with the insidious Dr. Fu Manchu.

Or Halliburton.

40. Kappa Kappa Gamma
Yes, the poor socially awkward anti elitist weirdo decided to go through Rush and before she knew it, she became a Kappa Kappa Gamma. I think that it was really a positive thing. Our campus was strictly anti hazing and our national organization is as well so no horror stories that you always hear about. Initiation is a ceremony where the initiates are given important secret knowledge just like in classical Greek mystery cults. I have benefitted from that knowledge.
