Is "What kind of music do you like" a hard question sometimes? |
|
I think it is cause all the stuff on my ipod is all over the place just really random stuff. And I'm usually not in the mood to try and figure out if I have a favorite. It'd be easier just to show people my ipod but I never carry it around with me.
Is it the same for anyone else?

1. If you have all day, I can let you know what kind of music that I like |
|
If my prior YouTube posts might be a clue

2. I'm with Scorpio on this one. |
|
It ain't the question that's hard. But sometimes the questioner, unless he has all day, wishes he never asked me.

3. Depending on the context |
|
the question may not mean what it appears to mean. People with even slightly adventurous tastes could go on for hours answering the question. No, when I've heard the question asked it's more of an "icebreaker" question. The asker isn't wanting a catalog of your favorite songs or artists - s/he's more likely asking for a representative sampling, to see if you have any common ground upon which to start a conversation. Kind of like "what are you reading these days?" or "seen any good movies lately?"

It's usually met with "I've never heard of any of these bands." Which is the reaction I usually expect.

If asked further I explain that if it's good it's good and that can be anything from country to baroque.
:hi:
Edit: Great is great too ;)

6. What I'm hearing now is the Gene Harris Quartet |
|
I had never heard of them before. I just discovered "Pandora," and told them I like the Turtle Island String Quartet. I said make me a radio station "Kinda Like THAT."
They are totally blowing me away -- awesome stuff I'd never have known I liked, so far it's about six groups that are PERFECTLY up my alley, and I am addicted to the station and can't turn it off.
I just discovered searching online for free internet music 'cuz I decided to give Thunderbird another try and it said, well, how about Foxy Tunes?
. . . . now my next project will be plugging my 'puter into my stereo. Yeah, I know, a few years behind most of ya on this stuff!
So, for posterity, here are the other groups I'm talking about today:
Didier Lockwood Joe Venuti Tony Rice & John Carlin The Hot Club Gaucho The Spider String Quartet Michael Camillo & Tomatito John Zorn
I swear, if I was rolling in the dough, I'd go buy one of EACH of these artists, and just zone on nothing but this music for about a week.
Okay here's one that sounds familiar, who is this?
Paul Desmond
This one may not quite fit PERFECTLY into my tastes as the others, going by this song.
_________________________
Otherwise, I got a thrill punching in "Leonard Cohen," and also "Randy Newman" and getting a buncha cool songs or old favorites by other artists streaming along one right after the other.
I like!

12. Not really. My musical taste is quite narrow. |
|
Indiepop, powerpop, punk, folk-pop/punk, bubblegum and tweepop.
I generally don't stray far from those confines.

15. It's ALWAYS a hard question for me. |
|
I listen to old country, folk, electronic, "classic rock," classical, pop, "alternative" (whatever that really means--all my stuff that doesn't quite fit, I guess), etc.
My students ask me this question all the time and I can never really answer it with specifics. My Willie Nelson poster and my Kurt Cobain poster I have taped up in my classroom might give them more of an idea, though.

I play everything (and I mean, "everything") on my overnight radio show, so I'll listen to pretty much everything, musically.
I just played in a row "The Grand Tour" by George Jones, "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" by Pere Ubu, and a speech by a drunken John Wayne at a Young Republican dinner in the early 70's; that was fun :D

The easy answer is "metal." The slightly more in depth answer is "melodic death metal," though I like metal of many kinds from death, black, and thrash, to power, progressive, and symphonic. The real answer is a wide range of things including metal, punk and hardcore, Celtic, folk, and world music, movie soundtracks, and jazz fusion.
I can never answer the "favorite band" question, either. When asked, I can usually get it down to two, and then be unable to choose. :P

24. It's easier for me to list what I DON'T like. Takes less time that way. |
|
I dislike almost all country music, unless it has a strong rock influence and doesn't sound like right-wing claptrap.
I dislike gangsta rap, meaning the type that promotes gun violence and pimpin' ho's and blah blah blah. I got turned on to Immortal Technique and Brother Ali here at the DU and have begun to appreciate rap and hip hop in ways I would not have otherwise thought possible.
I dislike most opera because I can't stand the singing, and it especially doesn't help when you have to read along with English translations a lot of the time while you listen.
I dislike most early rock 'n' roll. To me most of it is like "Commercial Yesterday" or the Greatest Generation's equivalent of Britney Spears and whoever else is really popular on top-40 radio right now. Or to put it another way, it was all very formulaic and about the $$$$$.
As already stated I think top-40 for the past 21 years has been one big festering shit pile. 1987 was the last decent year.
Oh, and Van Morrison's voice peels the paint off my walls so none of that.
Just about everything else is great! :P
