1. Once upon a time at the doggie park...
there were a couple of border collies. They kept running in wide circles around the other dogs as if attempting to herd them into the middle of the field. It was pretty funny. Of course, my wiener dog took off after them because he likes to run! (And he thinks he's a rottweiler.)

8. Our Border Collie Cody used to herd the dogs at the dog park.
We had to quit taking him because he was such a nuisance. If a dog was playing fetch with a ball, Cody would cut him off and "herd" him back into the group.

14. It was really cool to watch the dogs "work."
The adults just watched in wonder but the dogs didn't seem to care.

19. BEAUTIFUL!
Got any good stories? Just met 'neighbors' shelties, walking around. Will look for them today, which is supposed to be a beautiful day!

21. Well, the sheltie was the runt and the border collie is huge.
The sheltie is all of 17 lbs full grown. She was half the size of the other 7 pups. I picked her because when I sat down in their outdoor area, the other 7 set to work shredding my shoe laces. She came over and wanted cuddles. No contest.

The border collie is also female, but at last check she was 77 lbs. That's large for a MALE border collie! They're both sweet dogs and get along great.

From day one, the sheltie attacked the border collie like she was trying to kill her. After a while, they started to play in a way that was a little frightening. The border collie would (and still does) grab the sheltie by the neck and growl like she was trying to kill her. She's never hurt her. They do this at least once a day.

25. Its so interesting to watch them 'play,'
in a way that we never accept for our own, and they KNOW they're playing, and they HAVE to do it, to keep themselves up to snuff.

I can just imagine they day you met the sheltie! NO CONTEST indeed!

11. Even the mixes are smart. Those old genes are strong.
I have a border collie/lab mix. Smart, graceful, loyal, and loving. We have three other dogs, two of which are herding mixes. I love herding breeds the best, not to take a thing away from our youngest, Emmy, a weimaraner (whine-araner LOL) mix. They're all rescues from some pretty bad situations who came with some health and behavior problems. With time and love, they've all overcome. Now, they don't just make friends wherever they go -- they make fans.

Love m'girls!

9. One of the stories I've been following that just this morning ended well
involved the border collie that disappeared for nearly a month. Just yesterday he turned up nearly 25 miles away. Tears of joy were shed nationwide and I'll admit some of them were mine. I don't know the fellow or his dog IRL, but we have exchanged a few PM's on going green and life in general. The dog is really a cool kid and I've come to think very highly of his human.

Here's the link.

16. Wow, I was navigating the blog trying to find when Angelo left
He was gone from March 2 to April 9. I felt so bad for 'the Hermit', then happy that he got a new puppy, then Really happy that he found Angelo after so many days!
It looks like a wonderful place he's building, in a beautiful spot. I'm going to send a link to my friend's daughter and her husband who are building an off-the-grid house this summer in Maine....she's a second generation off-gridder!

I'm glad our rescued Border collie-Heeler has only wandered to two nearby parks (it seems to find someone to throw something for her!) When we caught up to her after our gate blew open and she had slipped out, she was dragging a 4' fallen branch to a young guy using the library's wi-fi while sitting at the library park. Another time we found her bringing an empty water bottle to a park maintenance guy at the park a block from our house, and staring at him, willing him to throw it!

23. Dear, it was a twelve foot branch
I first slipped my belt around her to lead her home but she dropped a shoulder and refused to budge away from that branch. I had to break off a four foot piece and get her assigned to it before I was able to lead her home. She's a working fool and still tells me she wants a band of sheep to work. That, or a dozen cats in a large padded room.

24. When our Heeler/Spaniel mix was 8 months old
she used to carry - carry - around an 8' limb. It didn't take her any time to whittle it down to nothing. That's how she got her first baby-nickname, Termite. Never underestimate the power of cattledog teeth! To her credit, she never, ever touched anything that wasn't hers. None of our furkids ever did. We're very blessed to live with them.

15. sometimes I wish my border collie had an off switch
He is "on" every moment of every day. He will never, ever, ever allow a cat to walk downstairs without being at the bottom of the stairs to block it. He will never allow a cat to come inside without giving it the stare and the stance. Three cats and a border collie is an exhausting combination at times. He's a crazy guy, hard wired to herd.

I love the stories I hear about these. Years ago we visited Scotland, and stopped overnight at a B&B. The family farmed and had sheep. Have a photo wherein they sat my daughter (3 years) in trunk of their car, into which jumped one of their Smarties!
