1. I wish I had my own personal TANK! |
|
As an ex-tanker, I'm fascinated with military ground warfare armored vehicles. This despite essentially being a pacifist. It's an uneasy paradox to live with.
But sometimes I wish I had my own tank. Not to drive around and intimidate other drivers, the way I'm sure people who own Hummers and those huge quad-cab pickups do. Just for fun.
My father-in-law is a wealthy businessman, and every once in a while, I wonder if he is going to succumb to the latest fad among rich armchair warriors: purchasing a decommissioned obsolete tank. You see History Channel programs about this fad all the time. I expect if he does, he'll come to me for advice on his purchase, considering my expertise on the subject.
He owns a vast tract of property east of the Cascades where he could drive it around to his heart's content. And, despite my environmental good intentions, I'd love to be able to join him in the fun...

|
Edited on Sat Sep-25-10 02:35 PM by Kali
some guy who works at the Palo Verde nuke plant bought it a few years ago
always wondered what was left and what condition it was in down there
I've been tot eh museum they have in Green Vally and found some old pictures of when they built the one on us, and a few years ago met a heavy equip operator (woman!) who worked on it

If I had owned land on which one of these were located, I would have been really tempted to buy it back when it was decommissioned. I've never been in a Titan silo. Have seen a few more recent ones - the sort that will never be sold due to treaty obligations to destroy them once decommissioned. Amazing stuff, on so many levels. Pun intended.
I have heard of one guy who has a larger facility that he has converted into a commercial mushroom farm - the underground temperatures are, apparently, nearly ideal for that. Not sure what else you could do with one - the world's largest wine cellar, perhaps, or a really secure storage facility for archived electronic data. Otherwise, I guess they are just a plaything for well-heeled eccentrics ....

9. it was down on state trust land |
|
and for years we thought it had gone back into the state's hands as there was an off site communications facility that DID go back to the state.
Yeah it would have been nice to snag - the surface 20 or30 acres is near the interstate and pretty accessible for commercial use. I always thought it would be kind a cool place to park a half dozen airstreams outfitted with 60's era anodized aluminum kitchenware and rent them out.
There is another one down in Green Vally that was being used as a Bed and Breakfast - not sure if they are still in business and I have no idea what it looked like. I am pretty sure there is one north west of Tucson that is a private residence.

The coolness factor for that is through the roof.

14. You'd just about need to be Bill Gates to afford it |
|
The cost of restoring it would likely eclipse the purchase price and the operating costs would be through the roof. Still it would be just about the coolest way to get around.

Excellent for close in work and packs a hellva punch for a little sucker. Turns on a dime and gives you nine cents change. Guaranteed attention getter.
