IMPEACHMENT/PEACE GROUPS HONOR TROOPS ON MEMORIAL DAY
(Los Angeles - California, May 23, 2008) In support of veterans calling for impeachment of President Bush, activists for impeachment and peace will banner freeways from coast to coast on Memorial Day, May 26 calling on citizens to demand impeachment and to get our troops out of Iraq. Veterans for Peace plans to deliver 10,000 impeachment signatures to House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers by next month.

Out of frustration over Congress inexplicably dragging its feet in calling for investigations and hearings on the president and other administration operatives, the Los Angeles Area Impeachment Center and CODEPINK LA aim to maintain a level of citizen awareness on impeachment and on getting the U.S. out of Iraq.

"With thousands of motorists on the highways this long weekend, it's a perfect time to get this important and urgent message across with what we call 'freeway blogging for peace'," says local CODEPINK coordinator, Alicia Forrest.

CODEPINK is the national women's peace group that recently garnered international attention when its members disrupted General Petraeus' report on Iraq, and called Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice a "war criminal," confronting her with red-painted "bloody" hands. Since the lead-up to the Iraq invasion, CODEPINK has inspired thousands of women to make the color pink synonymous with political rabble rousing.

The Los Angeles Area Impeachment Center continues the work of the national impeachment center started in July 2007. Activists organize events and lobby California House Judiciary members and others to call for hearings, investigations, and possible impeachment and indictment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

"When people say it's too late to impeach, we say, 'No, January 20, 2009 is too late,'" says Director Tobi Dragert. "Hearings can be called tomorrow if there is the political will. It is imperative that crimes committed be exposed and appropriate charges be brought. How can we honor our service men and women or revive faith in our Constitution if justice is not valued at the highest levels of government? "

For further information about this action, please call Alicia Forest with CodePink at 310-403-9760 or Tobi Dragert at 213-304-5206.
