Today on NBC Meet the Press, RNC Chairman, Ken Mehlman, refused to support the Republican candidate in Connecticut’s Senate race. Mehlman expressed his agreement with Lieberman’s policies on the Iraq war and national security. Mehlman said that Lieberman had been kicked out of the Democratic party for supporting the President’s position on the Iraq war.

:spray:

Does Ken Mehlman secretly want Joe Lieberman to win Connecticut’s Senate seat in the upcoming election?

transcript

MR. GREGORY: Let me ask you about the Republican candidate in Connecticut, Alan Schlesinger. You’ve been going around the country…

MR. MEHLMAN: Yeah.

MR. GREGORY: …and been very clear…

MR. MEHLMAN: Yeah.

MR. GREGORY: …and forceful for your support of Republican candidates. Are you endorsing Alan Schlesinger to be the next senator from Connecticut?

MR. MEHLMAN: There’s nothing more important to me, as you know, than electing Republicans. It’s what I spend my life doing; it’s my passion. The way I do it…

MR. GREGORY: So, yes?

1. What's really funny
is that we've got DUers starting threads trying to prove Mehlman's assertions are true.

Meanwhile, Ken looked like an idiot dodging what seemed like a very innocuous question.

4. Maybe that's because... Ken Mehlman *is* just that stupid.
Remember this is the guy who sent out the RNC memo to GOP congressional members that whether they like it or not, they are "Brand W" republicans (at least until the next GOP pres nomination is settled), and that they needed to back Bush and all his policies rather than criticize them ... because "If bush goes down (in public opinion), we all go down..."

"Brand W Republicans." Always thought we should take Ken's phrase and use it... liberally.

Hasn't been working so well for them. More congressional races have been "upgraded" from CQ from more safe categories to higher risk categories (eg "safe republican" moves to "lean republican"; "lean republican" moves to "Too close to all" (as in TOSS UP))

It is generally my opinion that when Mehlman looks stupid, it because deep down... he really is stupid.

6. Kenny looked as panicky as Barney Fife this morning
and it appeared the "Will you endorse Joe Lieberman?" question caught him utterly flatfooted...although in another thread somebody told me he got asked that on Hardball earlier in the week.

He did look like an idiot toe-dancing around the question...My wife tends to be more conservative than I, and she was laughing uproariously at Kenny's evasions and silliness.

9. squirmy Ken.
I think Ken has only two modes: squirmy and/or (when prepared) smarmy. Makes him a great figure head for the GOP party.

10. The camera loves him (snicker)
It was especially funny to watch him in comparison to Dean. Dean was in Vermont, in his own setting, lit like a movie star and looking confident; Kenny was squirming under the hot lights and twitching.....

14. Dean has grown into his role.
Ken hasn't.

Then again, imagine having to be the public face for W Cheney Delay and Rove, and be charged to try to have their insanity... look sane and, well, attractive.

19. Especially if the rumors about Kenny are true...
If they are, he has to grin and make excuses for people who think he has no right to exist.

5. It doesn't appear that Mehlman secretly wants Joe Lieberman
to win Connecticut's Senate seat to me. He seems pretty overt about it.

Love is a many spedered thing. No one should kiss and tell.

7. Does not support the Republic candidate from CT
This is the first time I have EVER known a Pub not to blindly support any person, friend or stranger, with an "R" after his name.

This tells me that the GOP candidate is only a placeholder for Joe.

MR. GREGORY: Why endorse candidates all over the country but not do it here?

MR. MEHLMAN: Again, I do it based on the leadership in the state.

MR. GREGORY: Do you want Senator Lieberman to win, to, to expose the Democratic Party as divided and weak?

MR. MEHLMAN: I’m following—I’m following the advice—I’m following the advice of my leadership, which is I’m focusing on making sure that Chris Shays and that Nancy Johnson, and that Rob Simmons is re-elected, and that Governor Rell is re-elected.

Joe has gone to the dark side. Don't count on him to support anything Dem. Might as well remove him from committees now.

8. Joe wasn't kicked out he was vote out, big difference!
Mehlman and the rest of the repugs better stop worrying about the repug party and start worrying about the country, as usual they have it wrong.

Dem's have it right imho, first it's family, country, then party! This may be the biggest difference in the two parties.

11. When was the last time the Democratic Party "kicked out" anyone?
What's the procedure for doing that? Does the DNC hold an official hearing, followed by a vote? Was Zell Miller kicked out? Or Lyndon LaRouche? Or Ken Phelps?

15. Lieberman wasn't kicked out. He mentally left the party
when he continued to support Bush's insipid and backward foreign policy plan, but he physically left the party after he lost its primary because of his support for Bush's backward foreign policy plan.

Duh.

16. So, if, for example, Santorum would have stood up for Big Dog ...
... Mehlman expects us to believe that his card carrying GOP Asshat status wouldn't have been revoked, instantaneously ??

Please. :freak:

17. Hah! I hope this is the meme they run with - it will backfire just like
the "don't vote for Democrats, they'll impeach Bush" did. Turns out many Republicans want him impeached too. Oooops!

18. This guy is a little smug nazi.
To impune the motives of 200,000 voting Americans who have the right to vote their will. I'd love a chance to scream at this jerk.

21. I just love these guys like Mehlman and Lieberman -
all for democracy in Iraq, but apparently against it for Connecticut.

Hey, bozos - it was the voters who kicked Joe out!
