Am I alone in hating two-year campaigns? |
|
Jeebus, people been talking about '08 since '04, but in the last six months it's been getting far too loud. Now it starts for real with 2 dozen people running for President, screaming to be in the headlines, forgetting what their jobs right now are, and the eternal begging for money. Fuhgeddabout anything serious going on or who might stand for anything in particular, just daily wrapups on how the horse race goes. And I just can't wait till the primary wars start here. (As if they haven't already.)
Wouldn't it be nice if NOBODY could announce running until Jan '08? Maybe even June?
I'm starting to think that bringing back the Electoral College the way it was otiginally intended isn't such a bad idea. Maybe the Catholic Church has the best idea-- anyone who says he wants to be Pope is immediately excommunicated.

People are pretending that life is going to go on as usual.
Innocents and soldiers are dying. There is a war to be stopped right now.
Now.

I steer clear of those threads for the most part. To be honest, the election isn't on my radar screen. There's plenty of issues to deal with right now.

Maybe we should go by the theory of "s/he who speaks the least has the most important things to say" and vote for the person in the headlines the least. Because, honestly, what difference does it make in terms of qualifications or positions/platforms if John Edwards criticized (maybe) John Kerry or if a woman (Clinton) or an African-American (Obama) could be the first of something to be president? Not much, if you ask me. What is important are the positions on the war that Kucinich takes or the positions on poverty that Edwards takes. And those are the things that don't make the news, especially with two years of campaigning ahead. So I'm going to go with the theory that the person I hear about the least, is the best.
But it would be nice if there was a pre-deadline of sorts that barred anyone from announcing before a set date, say six months before the first primary. Or even set a date and a place and anyone who wants to run has to show up there and announce all at the same time in person. And I didn't know that about the Catholic Church, but I agree, it is the best idea.

7. Good point about people not doing their jobs. |
|
While not all candidates who have announced are in office, those that are need to have their noses to the grindstone. Period. I would support say a 6 month or a 12 month limit on announcements. If you ran, do your freaking job. We need everyone to be going 100% to stop the madness of King George.
