We Know
Every morning, I turn on my computer and peruse the various websites I’ve come to rely on for the news – the real news that is, the items the MSM will never discuss, the stories that our country’s newspapers will never print, the details that inevitably wind up being spun into oblivion or relegated to the back pages in hopes that no one will notice them.

And every morning, I anticipate that BIG story finally hitting the airwaves: "Oh, my God, they KNOW! – the they being we, the People; the know being our awareness of the facts that this administration, and the complicit mainstream media, try so desperately to keep hidden from sight.

Perhaps it’s simply the age of people like Cheney, who still think a contradictory statement can be explained away by blaming Jimmy Olsen, an overly-eager cub reporter who simply got it wrong – not realizing that their every word is recorded for posterity through a series of tubes(!), where they can be accessed, compared, and analyzed within seconds.

Or perhaps it is simply wishful thinking on the part of an administration that has placed too much hope in hype, too much sell in spin, too much misplaced belief in their ability to portray the unbelievable as reality.

The surge is working, the soldiers are committed and content, the economy is booming, the nation’s infrastructure will last a million years, the outsourcing of American jobs is a giant leap in the right direction, the national debt is of no consequence, the War on Terror is being won, God is in his heaven and all is right with the world – or so we are told by a so-called president, confirmed by a more-than-pliable media controlled by corporations who are more than aware of which side of their bread is the buttered side.

But the truth is out there, and it’s a truth no one scarfing down that buttered bread wants to acknowledge, no less accept. The truth is: WE KNOW.

WE KNOW that the Surge is just a new label for Stay the Course, and that establishing democracy in the Middle East is a cover story for grab the oil.

WE KNOW that when our soldiers come back from Iraq in caskets that can’t be photographed, it’s not a matter of family privacy, but a matter of don’t think about the price you’re paying for what a handful of idiotic neocons foresaw as money in the bank – their own bank.

WE KNOW that soldiers – exhausted, over-extended and underpaid – sent into combat without proper equipment does not equate to Supporting the Troops.

WE KNOW that no matter how many times the so-called news programs trot out the likes of Billy Kristol to get his take on what our next military move should be, he hasn’t gotten one thing right since day one - and yet his advice is still sought and relied upon.

WE KNOW that the latest Osama Bin Laden film production will always make its media debut when support for the war in Iraq has dropped another few percentage points in the latest poll.

WE KNOW that the Republicans will throw one of their own under an oncoming bus if it serves as a distraction from something even more nefarious than a man in a public restroom hopeful of a sexual tryst.

WE KNOW that Saddam had no WMDs and that this administration was fully aware of the fact – along with totally debunked facts about yellowcake from Niger, chemical-laden drones that could strike within the US, and links between Iraq and al Qeada.

WE KNOW that the official account of what happened on 9/11 doesn’t hold water, and that this administration did everything in its power to avoid any serious inquiry into the events of that day.

WE KNOW that executive privilege is just another way of saying we’ve got plenty to hide.

WE KNOW that Valerie Plame wasn’t outted by accident, that Jessica Lynch didn’t go down fightin’ only to be rescued by the guns-a-blazin’ US Cavalry, that Pat Tillman didn’t die as the all-American poster-boy for war this administration hoped he would be.

WE KNOW about the Downing Street memo, the Abramoff emails, the Jeff Gannon sleepovers, the sanction of torture, the renditions, the Black Sites, the swiftboating of the truth-tellers, the marginalization of the truth-seekers, the redactions, the contradictions, the unofficial corrections of the official record, the last-minute remembrances of the official liars, the suddenly found Jesus exuberance of those caught-in-the-act, the suddenly remembered non-memory of those caught in the web of their own non-truths; the sex, lies and videotape that expose the fallacies of an entire administration and the party that supports it.

WE KNOW.

WE KNOW ALL OF IT.

When are we going to stop playing this game of pretending that no one KNOWS the truth; this charade of Fearless Leader, Contented Troops, Happy-Go-Lucky Public and Destined-for-Glory World Power?

When are we going to end this look-the-other-way, pretend-it-never-happened, swallow-the-talking-points, don’t-ask-don’t-tell-the-truth, act-like-it’s-all-okay coverage of events that only happened in the minds of those who have an agenda to follow, and a few million tons of snake-oil to sell?

WE KNOW.

And once you get that fact embedded into your buy-our-crap, support-our-sponsors, spend-your-money, ignore-the-facts-in-front-of-you, all-but-empty talking heads, we might – might – be on our way to putting a once-great country back together again, before it’s too late.

So I'll use the body of my response to say:

Holy fuck, that was brilliant.

This'll be all over the tubes in a few days, and a lot of people will be inspired. Better still, a lot of politically-challenged Bush dead-enders, suiciders and Constitution-haters in the shallow end of the internets will be froth-at-the-mouth, ad-hominem, knee-jerk, Gollum-on-STP-with-a-side-order-of-xenophobia, crazily-chewing-their-tails-off-until-their-asses-are-rubbed-red ultramegapissed.

I'm looking forward to that.

Information is power.
excerpts from the book
War Made Easy
How presidents and pundits keep spinning us to death
by Norman Solomon
John Wiley and Sons, 2005, pape
p39
On April 25, 1972, the White House taping recorded this noontime dialogue among President Nixon, White House press secretary Ron Ziegler, and Henry Kissinger
President: "How many did we kill in Laos?"
Ziegler: "Maybe ten thousand-fifteen?"
Kissinger: "In the Laotian thing, we killed about ten, fifteen. . .
President: "See, the attack in the North that we have in mind... power plants, whatever's left-POL , the docks .... And I still think we ought to take the dikes out now. Will that drown people?"
Kissinger: "About two hundred thousand people."
President: "No, no, no... I'd rather use the nuclear bomb. Have ' you got that, Henry?"
Kissinger: "That, I think, would just be too much."
President: "The nuclear bomb, does that bother you? ... I just want you to think big, Henry, for Christsakes."

Nine days later, while conferring with Kissinger, Al Haig, and John Connally, the president said:
"I'll see that the United States does not lose. I'm putting it quite bluntly. I'll be quite precise. South Vietnam may lose. But the United States cannot lose. Which means, basically, I have made the decision. Whatever happens to South Vietnam, we are going to cream North Vietnam .... For once, we've got to use the maximum power of this country ... against this shit-ass little country: to win the war...

Perhaps a new spirit is rising among us. If it is, let us trace its movement, and pray that our own inner being may be sensitive to its guidance. For we are deeply in need of a new way beyond the darkness that seems so close around us.

It's the last thing a family wants to confront and acknowledge.

Even voting Americans are so brainwashed by now. Let's put this into context: When you can convince a majority of Americans that a draft-dodging coke addict is a stronger leader than a decorated vietnam vet, you know you have a problem.

15. I agree, except on 9/11. The "official story" makes far more sense than the conspiracy theories.
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 06:21 AM by Perry Logan
Despite the complaints of conspiracy folks, I have yet to hear an alternate scenario of 9/11 that makes half as much sense as the "official story."

The administration's unwillingness to allow a decent investigation proves nothing. This is, after all, the most secretive and deceptive administration in U.S. history. They probably wouldn't cooperate in an investigation of anything.

If the Bushies had been behind 9/11, the much-maligned 9/11 Commission Report would not have been so shoddy. After all, if you're doing a "whitewash," you want it to look very thorough, giving soothing answers to all questions. Otherwise, the whitewash doesn't work.

25. It's not either official story or alternate scenario.
Liars rule of thumb - when telling a lie, stick to the truth as much as possible only lying where necessary.

Something about 9/11 is not kosher - that doesn't mean the entire official story is fabricated. BushCo has something to
hide with regard to this.

For example, it's pretty obvious they knew about bin Laden's plans in advance and ignored warnings. Yet while BushCo
admits to the warnings, they claim they were more in the line of 'historical background'. It's the partial lie, see?

29. Well, it was either a setup or it was horribly mismanaged!
Conspiracy theories are going to thrive in an atmosphere when something smells this bad.

Every aspect of this incident was questionable from Bush's slow reaction, to late reaction

from airforce defense, to whisking the family of the accused out of the country. On and on

the evidence swallows the innocent ignorance line of the * administration. The whitewash is

working, and has worked for 6 years now. The sloppy story has held because of withheld

evidence, fear to reproach a "wartime" president, and the stronghold of the media by the

interests behind the controlling powers.

You cannot give this group another pass. They will use it to steal your shirt.

48. I don't want to get into a full-blown discussion ...
... about the events of 9/11, especially all of the contradictory aspects to the "official story".

But let me say one thing, and leave it at that:

The attacks of 9/11 were, we are to believe, A CRIME perpetrated by "terrorists" on the American people.

And yet, the World Trade Centre was never treated as, nor secured as, a crime scene - which it should have been, had any real investigation been planned. Debris started being cleared right away; steel was sold as scrap and shipped out immediately.

Imagine any other administration being in power on that day. Heads would have rolled; all kinds of people within the gov't would have been called on the carpet to explain their actions, or lack thereof. The president (had it NOT been Bush) would have demanded reports on his desk IMMEDIATELY as to what happened, what went wrong, what could have been done differently to avoid such a catastrophe, what security could be tightened in future, etc.

This administration had to be SHAMED into action by the 9/11 widows and other interested parties, and then they dragged their feet at every turn. Bush and Cheney only agreed to be 'interviewed' on the topic if they were questioned TOGETHER, and NOT UNDER OATH.

Ask yourself if Bush and Cheney acted, at any juncture, like an administration who had been surprised by what happened, and determined to get to the bottom of it.

19. Brilliant, as usual
I have the same dream. Something will cause a mass-epiphany.

You are correct that we KNOW. Many know. Films like 'no End in Sight' demonstrate that many know, as did Fahrenheit 911. But yet the Orwellian, Lewis Carroll world continues on. People continue to live their lives, go to work, take the kids to school...

But like in the movie Network, people will gradually realize they are being played for fools; then resentment will take hold, and they'll be "mad as hell and not going to take it any more."

The signs that some put out at the 2006 election were trying to stimulate that: "Republicans think you're stupid."

I fear, though, that the takeover has gone so far that when the masses finally look up from the tube, or the ball game, or whatever, and say "hey, wait a minute!" it will be too late. It will be like cattle realizing that long march with cowboys keeping them company and protecting them from predators was NOT a trip to Disneyland, that the pens they are now enclosed in are a feedlot and that big building is a slaughterhouse.

I keep hoping though.

The whole world knows. Hell even yesterday while listening to the BBC on Sirius satellite radio THEY said it looks more and more like the U.S. had other motives for invading Iraq than going after "terrawrists". The BBC said that a majority British people believe the invasion is part of a broader U.S. regional strategy for control of the Middle east and it's oil. Believe me, the British people have seen through Bush since day one. The only part of the world in the dark is the mainstream U.S. thanks to our corrupt media. Sadly even my own parents still think Bush is ok thatnks to their ignorant viewing of Faux news. Keith Olberman, The Nation and a handful of comedians are the best we've got.

I can't figure out if Congress knows. Or if they're just pretending because they don't want to "upset" the largely uniformed public by being perceived as "not supporting the troops" with their "partisan attacks." It's so discouraging. They're supposed to be LEADERS, and that includes INFORMING the public. All they do is react to the Repug spin within the Repug framing, and end up giving them whatever they want.

42. K & R - I know I've said this before, but this is your best one yet!
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 03:53 PM by Raksha
I was thinking along these lines a little while ago when I was putting together yet another e-mail group from my address book. I'm trying do my part in spreading the "loose nukes" story far and wide. I realize I won't be able to prevent a catastrophe, certainly not all by myself and maybe not even with the thousands of other good citizens of Left Blogistan who are doing the same thing.

But *IF* God forbid something should happen, my friends will remember my e-mail. And they will begin to connect the dots on their own. And sooner or later, not only will enough of us KNOW, but we will DO SOMETHING about what we know. And there will be no way in hell the powers-that-be will be able to stop us, because when the right course of action presents itself, it will be so obvious to everyone that it will come together almost on its own.

I say this knowing full that "organizing liberals is like herding cats," but when the moment comes--and I suspect it will come sooner rather than later--the next step will be self-evident to everyone.

Knowledge is power.

What a very articulate post. I have been reading posts on DU for some time now. As a matter of fact, DU is responsible for kicking my ass into motion. I have always been pretty liberal, but never active. I was against the war when they tried to lie to us. As the painful years wear on, I am getting more and more sick and tired. What really makes me mad is the "what can I do" attitude. So many that I talk to, agree with me, but don't think they can do anything about it, so "what the hell" It is that attitude that places this county where it stands now. We the people are supposed to govern this country through elected representitives. We have to stand up, as the "little people" to make a change. WE can do something, but we have to do something first!!!!

I am sure that all of you here have already seen this, but I ran across a really good website yesterday. 911research.com it has some really interesting information that I never knew.

Once again, thank you to all the DU'ers that are helping to fix this horrible mess we are in!

45. Once again--an excellent post, Nance!
For years, I've wondered: Why do WE know all this, but THEY (our congressional "reps") don't know? How is that possible?

46. Unfortunately, THEY KNOW
That Americans in a collective sense don't care about the lies they peddle daily. There are, of course, exceptions, present company included, but the hallmark of obfuscation is an apathetic, uninformed and ignorant electorate.

THEY KNOW, so they keep it up.

47. Very interesting.
For the longest time I also have checked the internet every single morning with the thought that today will be the day. Only to realize that it isn't. Again. So that now I no longer expect anything, except for the unburied pile of crimes to get bigger.

I was just sitting here thinking that someone should hand deliver the laundry list to several key Congressmen. And perhaps even document the encounter. But to sit down for just a minute or two and point at each and ever one. And to get the Congressman's acknowledgment. Because perhaps they actually don't know.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the actual political process, only about 5% really "KNOW" and about 1/3 of them are publicans and neo-cons...

Alas...

I'm in a middle of a day of mourning for mammalian life on Earth. It happens sometimes

:hurts:  :hide:

On Edit: But I have a wonderful evening planned -- Beatles night at the UU :bounce:

54. THIS IS WHAT
:applause: a courageous elected Democrat should be saying in a televised speech! The litany of vice, lies and evil is absolutely mind-boggling.

58. How about the 9/11 "No Work, No School & No Shopping" proposal?
Isn't that what they are trying to say?

A great post NanceGreggs. Such a full package you have here, and then put a bow on it with number 48.
"This administration had to be SHAMED into action by the 9/11 widows and other interested parties, and then they dragged their feet at every turn. Bush and Cheney only agreed to be 'interviewed' on the topic if they were questioned TOGETHER, and NOT UNDER OATH.

Ask yourself if Bush and Cheney acted, at any juncture, like an administration who had been surprised by what happened, and determined to get to the bottom of it."

Thank you for that.
I hand out deception dollars to try and spread the knowledge. Last weekend I was handing them out at the Summer of Love Concert in Golden Gate Park. Someone asked me if I had been hassled by the cops. I said no, but he handed me a flier with information: CIVILWATCH, Taking action to protect your constitutional rights against incompetent attorney representation and Police brutality.
They Assist with:
Attorney Malpractice
Ineffective Assistance of Counsel
Vindictive Prosecution
Police Misconduct
Excessive Force
State & Federal Appeals
Hebeas Corpus
Certiorari
U.S.C. 1983
Torts

Thinking someone who reads DU might benefit from the information I post it. I think Adam Kokesh, (? not sure of last name. He held the sign up during Gonzales testimony about how many times he said "I don't recall"), & who was recently jailed for posting a sign about the Sept 15th March, might find it helpful.

I too have sent letters to my representatives. Woolsey said she had to rely on the Commission Report. How do we talk to them about the unanswered questions that should have been considered in the report. There needs to be a new investigation.

Keep it Up, I think this post would make a great handbill/Flier in itself.
