Can you stand another "So I was talking to a Republican" thread?
My boss, staunch (R), flipped the hell out when I put the John Edwards sticker on my car back in June. He thought it was hilarious. He also thought I thought like him about politics. Probably from all of the joking we do in our office ribbing each other about the party extremists. (Once I changed a Co-worker's home page to anncoulter.com while she was at lunch, not knowing that she was going to be immediately going into a web-based presentation for a large group at the company. I also bought her a Halliburton coffee mug off of ebay).

So anyway -- Same guy came up to me late last week and asked for a voter registration form (I had made it known that I had a stack of them).

Yeppers -- he is changing from R to D to vote for OBAMA (!!!) in our upcoming primary.

I was shocked, and asked him why.

His response? The Republicans have made a mess of our economy and I am willing to give Obama a chance to fix it.

:wow:

2. I used to read anecdotes like this in Reader's Digest.
I didn't believe them either.

and no one will read it.

12. a Republican columnist in my state admits to being "fascinated" with Obama...
http://kennebecjournal.mainetoday.com/view/columns/4784611.html

George Smith talks about meeting Bill Clinton in a diner during the campaign:

When Clinton came back around on his way out the door, Libby got him over to my table for the photo. I look a little shell shocked, but really that is just the look of a very hungry man, anxious for Clinton to move on so I could get my food.

Alas, we got into an extended conversation because Libby's husband, Jim, wanted Clinton to tell me a story about a bow he was given in Kazakhstan, and that conversation led to other stories. We probably talked for 7 or 8 minutes until I confessed that I was a Republican.

Then I told him my story of how my three children are all Democrats, and Bill asked me to urge them to support "my wife." I believe I promised I would. Anything to move him out of the diner and get my supper!

I didn't dare tell him that I was finding this guy Barack Obama fascinating. Hillary can shoot all the ducks she wants, but she won't get my vote.

Actually, I've been a John McCain fan for many years. He has the experience and integrity to lead our nation.

But Obama is an inspiration and experience is suddenly not so important. Bush had experience. How's that working for us?

Well, I better be careful, or my own conservative credentials will be challenged!

Before they change the title on this column to the native liberal, let me offer this thought. A presidential race featuring Barack Obama and John McCain could be one that makes us all proud.

Just don't tell my new friend Bill I said so.

George Smith is a Maine conservative bigshot. And even he is flirting with the idea of voting for Obama.

15. The conservative fascination with Obama does not surprise me. It reinforces my skepticism.
But I see the evidence of this in organized plans for Republicans to vote for Obama, not in didactic anecdotes.

16. In essence, I've been called a liar twice in the last 24 hours
One for very similar reasons (it was alluded that I, too, made up a similar story), the other for pointing out a comparison, oops, excuse me, analogy of the size of crowds Hitler drew to the size of crowds Obama draws.

They think we're making this shit up

Like no one on an anonymous discussion board ever tells the truth and it's all some part of a big conspiracy to brainwash everyone to support (shudder) Obama.

And like comparing the size of Hitler's crowds to those of Obama's is just an innocent analogy, with no hidden intent.

17. Its time I out myself, I was talking to a republican today who had flipped to Obama, he said.....
Damn you look ugly in that mirror.

No anecdote. Born and raised in Cleveland Ohio, 40 year old white guy, republican for my whole voting life, lived in Chicago while Mr Obama was running for the senate. My movement path from Cleveland to Chicago to Silicon Valley is directly related to the loss of jobs and manufacturing brought on by NAFTA in Ohio and the Midwest. I said to myself when I lived in Chicago, man, that guy is going to be a great president someday I hope he survives. I never expected to see it to be this soon but he is right the time is now.

Now I live in silicon valley and I have questioned my party affiliation for quite some time during this administration, but physically made the decision and sent in the registration when Mr Obama announced his candidacy. He not only changed my position with his candidacy but he did affect my kitchen table issues thinking and voting record even in the election before these primaries.

I can tell you alot of other info on myself if you care to ask and why he has converted alot in my specific demographic and why his being a framing candidate rather than a fighting candidate will be amazing for the coattails of the Democratic party in the General not just for the presidency but all levels.

I will also be clear that if he is not the parties nominee I will be hard pressed not to remove myself from any affiliation, Don't get me wrong, I think Ms. Clinton is a very talented politician, but Mr Obama is not just a candidate but a movement and a ground game you cant pay for and not capturing that movement for the party would show the shallowness of the strength of the parties future to impact its own health.

Intelligent discourse and questions welcome, flames to where ever you prefer to stick them in your own personal space.

4. I can stand it - glad to hear another story similar to mine.
There are naysayers who will tell us these Republicans are not really supporting Obama, that it's some sort of diabolical GOP plot but it isn't. Some may be trying to game the election but most, like your boss, really genuinely like Obama. :applause:

14. I've lost track now how many times I have experienced a similar thing
or read about it here and other places. 4 in my own family. 4.

I don't know why people are so surprised or even scared. This was happening, too, in 2004 with Kerry. We had 'Republicans for Kerry' groups, bumper stickers, etc. We kept data bases with their names and stats -- these folks didn't like Bush & Co. back then and they don't like Bush, McCain & Co. today. It's not rocket science, and no, it's not some crazy conspiracy (my head is still spinning from that DU thread.)
