12. a Republican columnist in my state admits to being "fascinated" with Obama...

George Smith talks about meeting Bill Clinton in a diner during the campaign:

When Clinton came back around on his way out the door, Libby got him over to my table for the photo. I look a little shell shocked, but really that is just the look of a very hungry man, anxious for Clinton to move on so I could get my food.

Alas, we got into an extended conversation because Libby's husband, Jim, wanted Clinton to tell me a story about a bow he was given in Kazakhstan, and that conversation led to other stories. We probably talked for 7 or 8 minutes until I confessed that I was a Republican.

Then I told him my story of how my three children are all Democrats, and Bill asked me to urge them to support "my wife." I believe I promised I would. Anything to move him out of the diner and get my supper!

I didn't dare tell him that I was finding this guy Barack Obama fascinating. Hillary can shoot all the ducks she wants, but she won't get my vote.

Actually, I've been a John McCain fan for many years. He has the experience and integrity to lead our nation.

But Obama is an inspiration and experience is suddenly not so important. Bush had experience. How's that working for us?

Well, I better be careful, or my own conservative credentials will be challenged!

Before they change the title on this column to the native liberal, let me offer this thought. A presidential race featuring Barack Obama and John McCain could be one that makes us all proud.

Just don't tell my new friend Bill I said so.

George Smith is a Maine conservative bigshot. And even he is flirting with the idea of voting for Obama.
