Hillary set to hit the trail hard for Obama
September 24, 2008

Hillary ramps up

An aide to Hillary Clinton says she's ramping up her push for Obama in coming days.

Clinton is heading Saturday to Flint, Lansing, and Grand Rapids, Mich., for a trip aimed at "talking about Obama's leadership on the economy," the aide said. She also did a round of morning shows yesterday, making the same points.

She's also scheduling trips on Obama's behalf to Pennsylvania, California, and Chicago; she's raised $5 million for the nominee in a series of events and conference calls, her camp says.

She also has a volunteer program starting up in New Hampshire on Saturday, under the rubric "Hillary Sent Me," and the aide said "thousands" across the country have signed up to participate nationally.

Clinton is evidently doing everything Obama's asked her to, and more or less put to rest the notion that she'd be a publicly reluctant supporter.

11. May I point out that
this is the Obama campaign, that THEY are in charge and that she is doing what THEY ask her to do?

I have not seen anyone in the campaign complain that she has not done anything they have asked. I call that working her heart out for him. If you think she should be doing more, maybe you should make that suggestion to the campaign.

33. Not to put too fine a point on it, but...
"working your heart out", means your HEART is involved.

Just doing what you are "asked" to do is usually NOT sufficient to meet that criteria.

Just saying.

41. Well, for a "finer" point,
She has done everything she has been asked to do, she has done it enthusiastically, and she should be doing ONLY what she is asked to do.

It would not be proper of her not to coordinate everything she does through the campaign. She should not be out there on her own....it is not her campaign.

Just saying.

Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 12:36 PM by MookieWilson
And the campaign might not want her to have a higher profile. If she did more, folks here would say "she still thinks she's running for president." OR "She just can't give up the limelight."

Who knows?

But ASSUME the WORST about the CLINTONS is getting tiring. Folks here hate the MSM except when it trashes the Clintons.

30. I don't know what constitutes "work her heart out for him" to you, but she has
been campaigning and fundraising for Obama since shortly after the primaries ended. She said that she would do whatever they asked of her and I believe she has done that.

Wrong Clinton. It isn't her support that has been in question.

Both Clintons can be a kingmaker if they put their minds to it.

14. So I guess Jon Stewart is right
Bill will have to get a tattoo on his forehead before he can pass the bar you want to set. He is not going to be an attack dog this election, that does not mean he cannot or is not helping. There are different levels and kinds of pitches that need to be made to reach different voters. The hardcore Dems are sold, we need the softer dems the independents, the softer republicans. Attacking will not get those voters. AS gratifying as it would be to both of us. I would rather get the votes than the emotional high of having him attack. Read this,

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bart-motes/bill-clintons-soft-sell-f_b_128903.html

then watch the Daily show segment again. I do not want Bill to morph in Newt, that ass did more damage than we will ever know with his brand of scorched earth politics. It is not coincidence that the only two former presidents that have used their position as former presidents to get things done, here and abroad, with broad support are Democrats. Ford? Reagen? Bush Sr.?
what did they do? Carter AND Clinton have both done great things to help people .

Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 12:40 PM by AtomicKitten
I think Bill Clinton is being cajoled by people (including Jon) to nudge him on board. What I've written before on this matter of opinion:

>>I'd settle for Bill Clinton chatting Obama up, but he is loathe to say much of anything positive about Obama. People are looking to him anxiously because of some less than helpful things he's said over the last three months (i.e., is Obama ready to lead? well, I could argue that nobody is ready to lead ...).

What he's not saying about Obama resonates as loud, perhaps louder than actually saying something.

His inconsistency is troubling and renders him unreliable as a surrogate.

20. Thank you x100 for this thoughtful post!
The Daily Show appearance was great last night and should have quelled some doubts.
Maybe President Clinton can just go for one of those temporary tatoos that he can wash off after the election?
Some folks on here will never be satisfied, though.
I agree with your assessment that he is taking this "measured" approach to get the low-info, hate politics, fence-sitters with his line of argument.
And I happen to believe it is going to effective.

If not you really can't comment on the situation. As we canvas for Obama we actually have Hill supporters who say that they are voting for McCain. This is a real and true problem. I will take time to discuss the primary with you after the election. Currently my problem is getting the vote out in Ohio for Obama. Hope you are working for Obama as well. Peace, Kim

We meet this people one at a time. Do we run an ad in the paper for a party in the park for Hill folks that want to talk about Obama. Probably not. Without options it will be one at a time until early voting and then my guess our work will be done because those with such conviction will vote as early as possible. Peace, Kim

29. It is not easy.
Ask them if they are better off then they were 8 years ago, connect McCain with Bush and 4 more years. Hand out information to combat the lies regarding tax increases and encourage them to go to Obama's web site for more information. If a person says that they are voting for McCain then that is it. If they are undecided we will contact them again.

39. Actually sounds pretty good.
These are probably the white, blue collar folks that your dealing with for the most part, they are not Democrats but were voting for Hillary because she connected with them. Try not to come at them from a place where you know better or that they aren't smart, they are smart but in a different way. Most are not racists, please don't even suggest it or it's over. They care about their homes, their children, their Church/God and their jobs. They care about the price of gas, food and what they are paying for rent or mortgages. They have a small town view of things, which includes love of country, family, god and the land.

If you have any family from a rural area, treat these people the same way you would treat that family. They are not stupid and if you treat them that way it will be over. Respect first and foremost. Feel their pain!

That is in case you're interested in how they think. I'm from the south and grew up with rural family and teachings, I out grew it but I still respect it. Good luck!

It is Dems who do not get out and help the Dem candidate win this election that are responsible if Obama does not win. My work in the community is 100% professional. I hope that yours is as well. FYI Obama was not my first choice but he is who we have and a *amn sight better than McCain. Be 'sour' as you put it but you will pay the consequences.

37. And you don't see that calling people "sour"
is counterproductive? Most voters don't love any candidate, but their votes count as much as those who do--rather than worry about the fact that some are reluctant voters, be glad that others in the party (such as Hillary) are willing to step up and talk to these people. Maybe your time would be better spent cheerleading among the already converted--at least you wouldn't be offending anyone.

Obviously I am 100% professional on the street. This campaign has been way too long and too many of us are very tired. Trust me that I don't offend people on the street. It is funny that one can contribute to Obama, house Obama volunteers, purchase equipment, supplies and food for my local office and still I need to be warned about being offensive.

I worked my butt off for many candidates over the years, just to see the LW of the party leadership make a concerted effort to snuff the one candidate who I thought was ready to lead the country in these difficult times. I'm working for the down ticket candidates and I'll show up on Nov. 4th and do my duty, that's all the party is getting from me at this point in time.

I have a feeling that we will be suffering a good long time if we do not get rid of the */McCain regime. Best wishes on your other campaigns. We have many good Dems here in Ohio that are fighting the fight. I do what I can for them as well. Peace, Kim

She was a Hillary supporter but supported Obama immediately when he became our nominee but this seems like something she could do to encourage those who are wavering for one reason or another:)

but not all. When they heard I was a pollster from DC I really got peppered with questions.

Anyway, the service is much better than that from the indolent teenagers that now work at the Florentine. But for comic relief there's always the McDonald's on Mohawk. Last time I was there it was actually friendly and efficient, which took some of the sport out of the trips. But, before, just getting an iced tea was always a fascinating study in human psychology and sociology!
