When Did You Feel Confident of an Obama Victory?
I know we weren't supposed to be overconfident, but I felt like Obama had this thing in the bag about two weeks ago. The reason was that all the polls in all those states couldn't be wrong in the same direction. If polling were all that unpredictable, here and there you'd see an implausible result like California favoring McCain.

I just had a good feeling about this election. Earlier this year I felt that Obama didn't use the dirt that he could have used, although we'll never know now what it was. He refused to stoop to McCain's level, and I think voters sensed that about him. The right wing attack machine was completely ineffective. Nothing stuck.

Despite my satisfaction with today's results, I feel I'm greedy for wanting more. I'd love to see Cheney get indicted. I mean, really! He deserves it.

1. About 3 weeks ago, more or less
I thought McCain putting all his marbles in Pennsylvania was the Roy Riegels move of the election; I knew then Obama was going to win.

3. After he told McCain he could walk and chew gum at the same time
When the financial crisis hit and McCain pulled his stunt of "suspending" his campaign and canceling the debate, I almost thought Obama would blink. Not only did he not blink, he told McCain that this was the exact time to have a debate and a president can do more that one thing at a time. I knew the guy was strong but he really impressed me there. Plus his overall reaction to the crisis was great and I knew that contrasting it to McCains erratic acts put this election in the bag.

5. After the debates
I grew more confident with each Obama victory there. I was a little bit rattled by Virginia this evening, though, so I wasn't totally confident until Ohio was suddenly called. That was a surprise, and it effectively ended the election.

6. When they instantly called PA.
I thought for sure there would be a "Bradley Effect" and enough touch screen shenanigans in the middle of the state that would at least keep us waiting for awhile and it didn't happen. I may have to raise my opinion of my fellow Pennsylvanians a bit.

9. When the bailout initially failed...
After McCain had promised to help negotiate a deal. He actually fucked things up and the House Republicans revolted. The bailout's failure caused the markets to crash even more, and consequently people became concerned with one issue and one issue only. That issue has traditionally been a strong point for Democrats. I knew with the economic meltdown immediately following the failed bailout that the character attacks WOULD NOT work. No matter what they threw at him, it wouldn't work.

10. Pretty confident at around 5:10 Election Night...
...when AAR reported that several networks had called PA for Obama.

Very confident around 6:30, when they announced the same for Ohio.

11. Barring nefarious election shenanigans - when Palin was announced...
But I will never forget the chill that went down my spine on the night of his victory of the Iowa caucus last January... at that point I was fully convinced and hopeful and determined.

The three (main) things that served to solidify my confidence exponentially - Palin, Suspension, Powell:

1. The Palin pick (and how sloppy/scant the vetting was and the continuing embarrassment every time she said or did anything).

2. McCain's reaction to the economic crisis (had he reacted reasonably, he'd have fared far better, he can't blame the economic collapse, he's responsible for how he dealt with it).

3.The Powell endorsement (which opened the floodgates). Powell's argument was so clear, concise, logical and specific it was something that became nearly impossible to argue against.

13. When the nation started moving big time to Obama based on the debates
All of us here knew how smart and competent Obama is, but the rest of the uninclined saw him as he is for the first time, and they liked what they saw MUCH more than what they were seeing from "that other one". ;)

17. Tonight when he was at 207 electoral votes
That was, honestly, the first time I dared to breathe a sigh of relief.

That's how shellshocked 2000 and 2004 had made me.

Now the healing begins!

18. When things were tight in IN, VA, and NC but when OH went blue, it was OVER!
Since Obama only needed to flip 18 EVs, Ohio's 20 EVs were enough to ensure victory!

22. After he picked Joe Biden for VP. I had little of the doubt
or nervousness many folks seemed to have, but when Obama actually won, my happines was overwhelming. I guess I had more fear the day before the election than any day before. When I saw how the local voting was going, I knew Obama would win.

I predicted he would get over 300 electoral votes, but not as many as he has.

30. I felt confident at about 7:00 last night
I went into Choir Rehearsal at 7:30 figuring it was won.....at 9:30, as I got into the car with my wife and I knew we had Pennsylvania AND Ohio, I felt it was in the bag.

The 'Pukes are going to have to figure out how they're NOT going to become some sort of Right Wing fringe party.......

32. When KO did the math
around 10 o'clock last night. When he added 207 EV to CA, OR, WA, and HI. That's when I really started to BELIEVE it would happen. By far, and without a doubt, this is the reason DU exists and is the happiest day ever on this site.
