2. Why confused? From the north, I65 to I10. from the west, I 10 Eastbound |

3. You are right - it is VERY confusing |
|
if you are coming from Mississippi on 98 - is this the route you are taking?
The best thing to do - and it is counterintuitive, which is why it is confusing - is to drive into Alabama and the Mobile city limits on 98 East. You'll pass a bunch of fast food joints and strip malls. Look for the interstate exchange, and when you get there, take I-65 North, towards Montgomery/Birmingham, even though it feels like the wrong way to go. You'll go a few miles on I-65 North before the exit for the I-165 bypass - take that off to the right, and you'll start to curve around back towards Mobile. That road narrows down a bit and takes you straight through a mile or two of downtown Mobile, past the Civic Center, through the tunnel under Mobile Bay and straight out to I-10 towards Pensacola. Right after you go through the tunnel, watch carefully for the I-10 exit, it is another that is easy to miss.
Hope that helps. I was working from memory, as I don't have a map handy. But I've made that drive many, many times, and that is by far the quickest and easiest way to go!

At least I hope fun in the sun is what is waiting for you in Florida. It took me several trips to get this route right, and I remember being very frustrated by Mobile (the city of my birth) every time!

Have to agree, it is exceedingly simple. IF you are coming from the West or the East I-10 passes right through, you don't even have to get off the road. Coming down i-65 runs right into I-10. Easy as pie, though not as tasty.
I live in Mobile, it has its good points and its bad points, but I'd say it is one of the best cities, Huntsville being the other one.

10. Mobile is intensely idiosyncratic... |
|
...a strange place with a very interesting and layered history. One of the older towns in America, it has a lot of Southern Gothic traditions and mores. "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" could have taken place in the town which is like a cross between Savannah and New Orleans.
It can take many years to learn the socio-political structures around here and why things work the way they do.
Mobile is also known as "The City of Perpetual Potential" and deservedly so. There's a heartbreaking litany of squandered opportunity in its annals.
If you're a history or sociology buff, it's a gold mine.

...when they were leaving or passing through.
Besides, I would have told someone coming from Moffett Road to head south on I-65 to I-10 west. The I-165 exit is easier to miss than the southern terminus of I-65. And it can also be a real bitch to merge with traffic just before the Wallace Tunnel, as you do coming up from Water St./I-165.
Personally, I'd continue down Moffett to Spring Hill (through scenic Crichton), then to downtown, through the Bankhead Tunnel, and then get on the Bayway, but I'm not going to tell a stranger to do that.

...Glad to know I'm aware of the ins-and-outs of the thoroughfares and drivers in my town better than some computer program in a server located in God-knows-where.

not pointing people asking innocently for directions in your town (which is also my hometown) to a "computer program in a server located in God-knows-where".
Just smile and give directions next time. Show some Southern hospitality!
