Anyone here support Alaska independence? |
|
I do. 3 less electoral votes for Republicans, 2 less Republican senate seats and 1 less US House seat.
Sign me up.

1. they'd probably be sunk if they seceeded. |
|
without the federal support they get, their standard of living would probably go way down.
and, well, seems to me we settled the issue of whether states have the right to secede about 140 years ago.

Much easier, and more economically feasible.

4. lots of people who don't live here talk shit... |

the sad truth is that it was a great place to live before the oil companies imported a shitload of asshole texans and their born again baptist conservative homeschooling smartass buddies from the south to come on up and fuck it up for everyone else.

It's a lot different here than it used to be. Once upon a time we actually had a Democratic senator. And the Republicans used to be nice guys like Jay Hammond.

7. Once upon a time we had TWO Democratic Senators |
|
Ernest Gruening and Bob Bartlett. Gruening was one of only two members of the U.S. Senate who voted against LBJ's Gulf of Tonkin Resolution(the one that let Johnson do anything he damn well wanted in Vietnam)so the Republican big business types recruited an opportunistic center-right creek named Mike Gravel to run against Gruening in the 1968 primary. The little shit one, then, a month after the election, our other Democratic Senator, R.L. "Bob" Bartlett, died of complications from heart disease. The Republican governor, Wally Hickel, appointed a young state representative named Ted Stevens(who had just happened to get a bill through in the 1967 session allowing governors to fill vacant Senate seats with appointees from outside the sitting Senator's party)to Bartlett's seat. The rest is bitter comedy.

8. This is what would happen... |
|
You get your independence. Then you start trying to sell rights to American multinationals to drill. Since you believe yourselves to be a modern and saavy nation, you refuse to sign production sharing agreements with the multinationals.
Then, you join the Axis of Evil, there's some mumbling about missiles, nukes, and missile defense, and the Koreans. You start hearing the phrase "snow Arabs", and Bob Novak talks about how much your churches look like mosques.
Then you get liberated, sign a PSA, and find that nothing's actually changed: soldiers dread being posted there, you're dominated by republicans, it's still cold. The only change is that your annual oil fund check goes to Kellogg Brown and Root for reconstruction and lobbying efforts.

Has not been rigorously enforced with regards to political participation in this state.
