Lamont blasts Lieberman over detainee bill
U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman on Thursday deserted the majority of Senate Democrats, including his Connecticut colleague, Sen. Christopher J. Dodd, by voting to approve a bill that would permit aggressive interrogation of suspected "enemy combatants" held in secret prisons and create a military court system to prosecute terror suspects.

Lieberman was one of only a dozen Senate Democrats to support the measure - for which President Bush personally lobbied - in a 65-34 vote widely seen as a victory for the White House with only six weeks to go before critical mid-term Congressional elections.

Ned Lamont, the Greenwich Democrat who defeated Lieberman in his party's primary last month, today blasted Lieberman for what he described as succumbing to a political game orchestrated by Bush and the Republicans who control Congress.

"This is all politics, it has nothing to do with fighting a real war on terrorism," Lamont said. "This is the flag-burning amendment of national security. It's just an irrelevant game of politics

1. Hi Nutmegger!
I was just going to post this myself, but I searched and found that you already had.
If the thread dies, maybe a repost in General Discussion is in order?

I'm going to canvas tomorrow for Lamont/Courtney in Groton. They're doing a coordinated canvas for the first time. I'm psyched.

4. Lieberman flip-flop on torture?
Earlier this month Lieberman said he was opposed to the version of the bill then being discussed: "Sen. Joe Lieberman and Democratic primary winner Ned Lamont found a point of agreement today: both oppose the Bush administration's strategy for interrogating terrorism suspects." http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/local/state/hc-18132437.apds.m0632.bc-ct--connsep18,0,3443470.story?coll=hc-headlines-local-wire

My understanding is that the changes since then were actually fairly minor. Lieberman is probably following the political axiom of playing to his base, which in this election is the right wing and the Bush supporters.
