Where is Storrs, CT?
I've found several decent Connecticut maps on-line that don't list this town. This is supposed to be where the University of Connecticut is. I even found a map from a University of Connecticut website that lists just about every town in Connecticut, but not Storrs.

http://magic.lib.uconn.edu/cgi-bin/MAGIC_DBsearch2.pl?Geography=37840&Loc=032

Here's a similar map I found that also does not list Storrs.

http://www.cthealthjobs.org/largemap.htm

What's the deal with this town? Does it exist or not?

Can someone point me to a good, free map of CT on-line that shows where Storrs is as well as all the other towns in CT?

1. Just go to UCONN at Storrs. That's Storrs. There's no there there!
Unlike Oakland, which has plenty of there!

2. The town is the University?

What are the towns that are near by?

I noticed on a different page on the UConn website that they list the town as Storrs-Mansfield. What's the deal with that? Are Storrs and Mansfield the same town or are they seperate towns?

5. OK, this will realliy depress you, but Hartford CT is the nearest town.
It's also close to Springfield MA, another depressing NE town (no offense to... well screw it, it's just the truth). What's your interest? Are you looking to get depressed or something?

9. Don't worry,
I most likely won't find that area depressing. I grew up in a little town (3000 to 5000 people) in Maine that had a high unemployment rate. I never found living there depressing. It actually was a great place to live.

My husband most likely will be going to school in both Storrs, CT and Newington, CT in the fall. I was trying to figure out what towns are in between those two towns. Any suggestions on places to live in that area that have cheap apartments (say about $500 - $600)? We need to be frugal because we'll be living off of student loans. Also, we'd like there to actually be some businesses in whatever town we live in. We don't want to have to drive very far to go grocery shopping or to go to a gym. We've been living in Orlando for the past 3 years. I imagine most towns/cities in that area have a much lower crime rate than Orlando.

11. what school is in Newington?
I just moved from Newington. I don't know of anything there beyond Newington High School? New Britain has Central CT State U.

Suggestions on places to live in between would probably be Manchester & Vernon. Both are convenient to Interstate 84 and are probably a bit cheaper than Newington or Wethersfield. East Hartford is a possibility as well, but it's not as nice a town as Vernon or Manchester... I'm not sure about Tolland, but it's very close to Storrs, not so close to Newington.

Manchester, Vernon & East Hartford all have a lot of convenience - large grocery stores, gyms, etc. Manchester has a huge retail area around Buckland Hills, including an indoor mall and a new outdoor mall, as well as several strip malls... not the easiest place to drive through around XMas. But, that is not the only area of Manchester.

Glastonbury & South Windsor are probably a bit pricy.

15. There's a certificate program for prosthetics and
orthotics there. The program is afiliated with Newington Orthotic & Prosthetic Systems, Hanger Orthopedic Group, and the University of Connecticut School of Allied Health Professions.

Thanks for the information.

19. I'd go with that as well.

There are less apartments in Glastonbury and especially South Windsor as well. Manchester and Vernon have both better and "more-challenged" areas. If you want more info, PM me as I've been in the area for the past 14 years. Hey, I'm apartment shopping in the area too right now. :D

13. NewJeffCT's suggestions are right on target....
I asked my husband his opinion, and he came up with the same suggestions as NewJeffCT. I have a friend who lived at the Pavilion apts near Buckland and it was murder at Christmas--and the place wasn't even as developed as it is now. Traffic from those places to Newington will be rough during rush hours. Newington has some decent, older apartments at the end near Berlin/New Britain. Is he going to school at Central? I know some folks there--also in Newington--grew up there.

14. In regards to Newington
Newington is as about a convenient a town as you can get - close to the Berlin Turnpike, Route 9 and I-84, plus it's close to West Farms Mall & all the shops around there; has it's own Stop & Shop & Food Mart, there is a Wal-Mart and two Targets (well, one is near the West Farms Mall in, I think, New Britain)... lots of chain restaurants... Circuit City, big furniture stores, Lowe's, 2 Home Depots just outside of town. Also is convenient to big movie theaters in Hartford, Plainville and Berlin.

Be warned, though, Route 175 can get busy during rush hours and I saw more accidents in my 6.5 years in Newington on Route 175 than I have in the rest of my life combined, and I'm 38.

8. Just look for Mansfield on the map
And, that is where Storrs is... it's a little quirk of Connecticut (or New England) that Storrs is really the Storrs section of Mansfield and not an actual town. Just like you probably couldn't find Plantsville on the map, either, but it's a section of the town of Southington, or Frog Hollow is a section of Hartford. It's something that dates back to Colonial times.

10. I know what you mean...
some places in Maine are like that too. Some sections of towns get their own postal addresses, so they seem like seperate towns, but they are not.

In Orlando, the locals refer to different areas of the city, but the postal addresses in those areas will still read Orlando and not the nickname for the area.

12. I just learned about this the other day--that Storrs is part of Mansfield-
I always thought it was the other way around. But it's like Elmwood is part of West Hartford, Liberty Hill is part of Lebanon, and on and on and on. All "villes" were once industrial areas, so they are all parts of "larger" towns--like Fichville, Taftville, Montville--I think we have about 200 of those in CT.

20. The parts near the Glastonbury or South Windsor lines are too bad...
Actually, the Hillstown Rd. area where Manchester, Glastonbury, and East Hartford converge is pretty nice. Overall, though, there school system is seriously challenged and the town itself is pretty much falling apart.

22. Well, we're mostly looking for a cheap convenient place
to live that isn't ghetto-like. I'm not sure what you mean by bad. I'll give you an example of the kind of place I'm trying to avoid. There's one part of Orlando call Pine Hills that's pretty bad. There's generally a lot more crime there in comparison to other parts of the city. A shooting took place in the middle of the day at an outdoors basketball court in Pine Hills this past week. This basketball court was very close to a place where little kids play. One guy died and another guy was injured. According to the cops there were lots of witnesses because several men were playing basketball there at the time, but no one will come forward and say anything. The one guy that got shot and lived won't say anything either. What a messed up community! The people that live there are so scared they won't report the criminals. I worked in the high school in that area as a teacher briefly too. Most of the students were VERY poorly behaved. Also, most of the students and their parents were VERY undereducated. I want to make sure I don't live in a place like that EVER!
