House committee objects to UARC

The House Committee on Higher Education yesterday passed a resolution "urging the University of Hawai'i to abandon establishing" a University Affiliated Research Center with the Navy.

The vote on the House Concurrent Resolution 238 came late yesterday following three-hours of testimony by students, faculty members and concerned citizens who said the proposed UARC is "bad business" for the university and the state.

The UARC expects to bring the university about $50 million in military research -- including some classified -- over five years through Defense Department contracts.

Critics, however, fear the UARC could set up publication restrictions on research results, allow weapons development to take place at a public university, and create a secretive system on campus by issuing security clearances to those involved in classified work. <snip>

1. UARC would mean the end of Manoa Innovation Center

it's back behind Manoa Marketplace shopping center, and it was supposed to be an incubator where high-tech companies could get started.

Now, as part of the remilitarization of the island (along with taking back Kalaeloa to use as housing for the aircraft carrier fighter wing) they will fill up MIC with all the UARC labs and stuff -- yep, right behind Safeway. Real akamai. :sarcasm:

2. A great chalking of the chancellor's parking space at UH

had arrows pointing to his car with lots of pointed lingo.
HAHAHAHAHA!

It's really pilau that they would take the MIC, that was paid for with our money to be an incubator for new high tech jobs. Disgraceful!!
