BMV closings and vote suppression
Has this been discussed here before? Pardon me if I'm just a bit slow, but it now seems clear that the BMV closing in Gary is just one facet of the usual Republican tactic of trying to suppress the minority vote. Note the initiative to require state-issued photo ID in order to vote. Couple that with making it more difficult to obtain said ID...

I don't doubt that there are valid efficiency arguments to be made for closing some license branches. But when state officials defend leaving a city of 100,000 with no branch by arguing that the offices are needed "where people own cars," then suggest the inconvenience to these car-less people isn't so great because there are branches within a few miles of Gary, where does that leave these non-drivers in their quest for state-issued ID?

Or are we back to the old days when ownership of property - which once meant real estate but now apparently means an automobile - is a prerequisite for voting?

1. Oh my god, you're right! I didn't even think of that before
but it makes perfect sense. The Gary closing never made sense to me before.

Aargggggghh!

2. No license branch in Gary? One of the larger population
centers in the state? I hadn't realized this. Sure sounds like at the least it is a preference to the "ownership society". But if there is NO branch in Gary - but there are other branches in (white) areas of the region - it suggests something much more incidious. But sadly that "incidious" thing - is in our state history.
