The more energy they spend attacking Republican stalwarts based on idiotic purity tests the better. Especially when they target someone like Lugar, who actually does from time to time stand up for what's right over the party line (such as his scolding obstructionism of the START treaty) - that speaks volumes to the "swing" voters.

if a Tea Party candidate somehow manages to topple Lugar (though I don't see how given that he's so beloved and the Tea Party doesn't have a "candidate" yet). With the Tea Party involved, LUGAR is the "sane" candidate IMHO.

3 to 6pm right-wing talker Pat Miller never misses an opportunity to take a bite out of Lugar's rear end. Should a Tea Party candidate make a run for Lugar's seat they'd have a cheerleader five days a week during the afternoon drive time.
