who is up for a March protest?

edit: I cannot seem to get a working link, the story is on January 28, titled "Political commentator to speak at KU."

I figured the story "political commentator to speak at KU" could be trouble, but I was not expecting the "queen of putrescence". March 29 will be a day off for me anyway, and I have a sign that says "boo".

1. Ann Coulter at KU?
:wtf: were they thinking???

Since the whole story is within DU's 4-paragraph limit, I'll just paste it in here:
Lawrence, KS (AP) -- A nationally prominent political commentator, conservative Ann Coulter, will speak March 29th at the University of Kansas.

Coulter has been invited to deliver the next in the Vickers Memorial Lecture Series at the Lied (leed) Center.

Coulter is a lawyer and best-selling author. Her most recent book is "Slander: Liberal Lies about the American Right." She writes a syndicated column for Universal Press Syndicate.

The K-U lectures series is named for J-A Vickers Senior, founder of Vickers Petroleum, and his son, Robert Vickers Senior.

I do not know yet whether I'll be able to come on the 29th, but I share your disgust!

2. Count me in
I hate that bitch, I am in KC and on vacation that week. I would love to drive to Lawrence for a protest.

PM me or post something here. I am definitely interested!!

Ooh, the sign possibilites! My head is just spinning right now.

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them all to Christianity." I'm thinking that ann's own words may be the best choice for a sign. LOL

3. We were thinking
of trying to invite Vaginal Davis (Condi's Drag Queen cousin) to KU at the same time. In the same vein we were thinking of dressing up like drag queens.

Otherwise, we're thinking of making fake Adam's Apples to wear OR wearing blonde wigs to mock her out.

My thought was to get a skull cap and glue straw to it.

In the meantime, since the lecture is part of the J.A. Vickers Sr. and Robert F. Vickers Sr. Memorial Lecture I think it would be wise to write them and let them know it isn't cool.

About the Vickers Lecture series:
The J. A. Vickers Sr. and Robert F. Vickers Sr. Memorial Lecture Series was established to honor one of the pioneers of the oil industry in Kansas. The series was created to enable the University to bring to campus prominent citizens "to debate or discuss subjects vital to maintaining a free political and market society." Robert F. Vickers Sr. administered the Vickers Trust from 1961 to 1995, and coordinated the lecture series for over two decades. When he died in 1995, the series was renamed to honor both father and son.
http://www.business.ku.edu/gen/bschool_generated_ns_pages/Lecture_Series_m1040.html

Former speakers include Ken Starr and J.C. Watts. http://www.business.ku.edu/programs/modules/collection.php?params=NiwsY29tbXVuaWNhdGlvbl9tb2R1bGUsVmlja2VyIExlY3R1cmVzLDE%3D

BTW: Here's the announcement I received.
Conservative pundit to lecture at KU

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter will come to Lawrence this spring for a lecture at the Lied Center, Kansas University officials announced Friday.

Coulter will deliver the J.A. Vickers Sr. and Robert F. Vickers Sr. Memorial Lecture at 7 p.m. March 29. It is free and open to the public.

Coulter is an attorney and author of three best-selling books, including her most recent work, "Slander: Liberal Lies About the American Right."

She writes a syndicated column and is a frequent guest on shows such as "Larry King Live," "Crossfire" and "Politically Incorrect."

4. free and open to the public?
Hmmmmm....That means I can heckle.
It seems it will do no good to complain since the Vickers series has a history of odiousness. As you mentioned Starr and Watts, not to forget William Esrey, petulant plutocrat of the month:
http://www.cipa-apex.org/toomuch/petulant.html
I say that we all dress like business people in suits, to show that respectable business people reject the putrid sludge she is trowelling out.
That announcement makes me wonder if this is not old news. Her most recent book is not Slander. She wrote the slanderous Treason after that and then How to talk to a Liberal.
I was thinking there should be a pamphlet How to listen to a Conservative, if you must.

5. Just a pamphlet? I think that would require a big thick hardcover,
plus a pair of earplugs! :D

6. Great idea
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 03:31 PM by Mabus
I like it. We shouldn't just stop at "How to Listen to a Conservative" pamphlet, we should have accompanying ear plugs.

In addition how about a couple of other pamphlets called "Reason?" and "Flounder" which lists her most laughable quotes/lies from "Treason" and "Slander" (I think we can find them on the net and won't be forced to actually look at her book).

on edit: sorry atommom, I didn't see your suggestion for earplugs. I started a response then had to leave the computer for a while. But, maybe great minds do think alike.

:hi:

9. FREE??
I paid $5 to hear MIchael Moore. Are they afraid no one will come if they charge admittance?

7. That is so disturbing
How can they do that? Maybe she is a lawyer and "best-selling author" but she's so grossly partisan that it just makes the school look incredibly biased. Unless they plan on also having Al Franken speak or something, this is just wrong on so many levels.

I get e-mails and literature for different programs at KU (I actually am close to sending in applications for certain programs next Fall) but I think I'll be returning those with nice remarks about how I couldn't support a school that is receiving public money but has showed itself to be supporting conservative agendas.

8. As a KU alum, I don't know if I'd count KU out entirely...
because it is still a good deal more liberal than the rest of Kansas, and, in general, a good school. But some complaints to the people responsible for this mess would definitely be in order. Sounds like it was arranged through donors to the School of Business (the Vickers family), who chose Coulter. The School of Business, not surprisingly, is a good deal more conservative than most other departments at KU. :eyes:

11. Back in the day I saw Noam Chomsky speak there for free
As an institution, KU doesn't have a conservative agenda.

12. That's true. The conservative agenda is on the part of the Vickers family,
who have the money to bankroll conservative speakers like this to "expose students to conservative viewpoints." If KU as a whole were more conservative, they probably wouldn't feel the need to do that. Damn libruls. :D

13. Good God
And I remember when Lawrence, Kansas was viewed as the "Berkley" of the mid-west...

What happened?
