75-Year-Old Army Surgeon Heading To Afghanistan
PERRYVILLE, Md. -- Some old soldiers fade away, but not Colonel William Bernhard.

The Army surgeon from Cecil County will be heading to Afghanistan next week and -- at age 75 -- will become the oldest U.S. soldier still serving overseas.

Bernhard returned home in December from a six-month tour of duty in Iraq and received his new orders on Monday. He will be assigned to an Oregon National Guard brigade and will be giving emergency care to wounded soldiers.

Bernhard said he serves so younger people won't have to. He volunteered to come out of retirement for his last mission.
