Power plant fuels mayoral race; click on story to see video

BROCKTON — The minutes of a meeting say he did. The heads of a city development organization say he did. And a letter to the state indicates he did.

But Mayor James E. Harrington is adamant — he says he has never supported a proposal for a power plant in Brockton.

Harrington, locked in a tight race for re-election against challenger Jass Stewart, denied three times last week he has ever supported the plan to construct a gas-fired plant off Oak Hill Way near the West Bridgewater line.

Harrington said in a debate Wednesday night, and in two separate interviews with The Enterprise, that he has never supported the plant.

“Let me tell you my position on the power plant, so everybody understands exactly where I stand and exactly what my position has been from the very beginning,” Harrington said during the debate at the Massasoit Conference Center. “First of all, people like my opponent keep on saying I'm in favor of it. That simply has never been true. I never said I was in favor of the power plant.”

Evidence indicates otherwise.
