4. What a perfect description: |
|
A raw wound.
What people outside of Minnesota really don't understand is how *accessible* Paul and Sheila were to all of us. 7 years. I still can't believe it.

5. Oh the memories of that day |
|
I came home for lunch and wondered why all the news about a small missing plane. And then as it became clear that Paul was on the plane, first I called my boss who said, "Oh SHIT!" and hung up on me without even thinking. And then as it became clear that Paul had died, I began to weep. I called my mom to tell her, and she answered the phone, said "hello" and couldn't talk, because she had already heard and was weeping too.
I remember listening to MPR and listening to the woman who called in from the western part of Minnesota, she was a Republican and said, "I'm just sitting here crying. This morning I was going doorknocking for his opponent, and now I'm sitting here crying." And the Saturday after, I heard Garrison Keillor describe the same caller on his show.
Oh how I loved Paul and Sheila.
Rest in Peace.

I remember sitting at stop light and noticing the woman in the car next to mine had her head on her steering wheel, crying. A couple of my coworkers had offered to drive me home as they were worried I was in no shape to drive, but I wanted to be alone.
My niece, who was in high school, didn't know what had happened at first but they all knew something bad had occured as they were seeing teachers crying in the hallways.
That weekend my nephew (12 at the time) asked me how long I would be sad about this. I told him it had been 34 years (at time) since RFK died and that still made me sad so I figured this would be pretty much forever.
