Medicaid cuts clear Missouri Legislature
By Virginia Young
Post-Dispatch Jefferson City Bureau
04/06/2005

UPDATE:

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Gov. Matt Blunt won a key budget battle Thursday as the House sent him a bill authorizing the elimination or reduction of Medicaid health coverage for tens of thousands of low-income Missourians.

The House's 89-69 vote came on the same day its Budget Committee was finalizing a roughly $19 billion spending plan that would implement the Medicaid cuts beginning July 1. The House is expected to debate the budget next week.

...

Rep. Frank Barnitz, D-Lake Spring, derided the bill as "the legislative equivalent of pushing someone in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs."

1. What did Jesus say about caring for the least amongst us?
So much for considering Missouri a Christian state. This is all part of the Bush legacy.

2. This is so sad. I hope all low income people who voted for Bush
will finally realize that they voted against their own best interest. These so called christians (that voted for Bush) really need to ask themselves "What would Jesus do?" I really don't think Jesus would take from the poor and sick and give to the rich.

4. As the morning newspaper says

Medicaid will be gone in Missouri by 2008. That is the plan.

It lowers the amount of allowable income for elderly and disabled to $7,082 a year. Repeals programs that allow disabled to work and receive medicaid, also people who lose their job due to temporary or permanent disabilities.

If you need dental care, glasses, hearing aids, wheelchairs, rehab services or hospice care, don't come to Missouri. You're on your own.

You will be checked on a yearly basis to see if you have been miraculously healed. They're going to file liens on your property if you are institutionalized. (That could raise the divorce rate)

One of the points made about this earlier is that it would eliminate the amount of federal money coming to the state for Medicaid. Why is Blunt eager to do such a thing? Is he trying to catch someone's attention?

I think there will be a lot of angry people about this. Local newspaper poll is running 82% against this.

5. WWJD?
Someone here on DU asked why the fundies who want to post the 10 Commandments on public buildings never suggest posting The Beatitudes. If they did that, they would really look like hypocrites. That Blessed be the Poor one is my favorite :)
