Can anyone recommend decent simple hotels in NYC that aren't astronomical in price? Two young wait-staff people we've met (from India) would like to visit these 2 cities for their first time, but will clearly be on a tight budget. They will not have a car, so public transport is a must.
We stay with relatives when we visit, so I am clueless to recommend anything.
Thanks in advance for any advice or leads.....

I didn't think about youth hostels, as I'm no longer a *youth*, but these young folks would certainly qualify!!

The NY Times runs articles on NY hotels every once in a while. Do a search and see what comes up. Once you identify a couple of possibilities, feel free to PM me and I'll tell you about the location.

I found this while searching for something else on the web. http://www.newyorkology.com/archives/2010/02/the_jane_hotel.phpI never heard of such a cheap rate in NYC. Tiny for sure but if your friends are young people without a lot of money, they may be interested in a place like this.

6. Check out the White House |

in the Bowery... It's very basic, and accessible. It's a hotel/hostel, and has rates accordingly. http://www.whitehousehotelofny.com/

7. The Hotel Edison might meet their needs |
|
Haven't stayed there in a few years, but doesn't seem to have changed much. Great location, adequate rooms (try for one that has been remodeled), reasonable prices, fairly large so a bit of a madhouse sometimes but also possible to get a reservation, even on short notice.
The coffee shop/deli/diner is just as it should be for a basic meal (and about 8 kinds of soup). Restaurant Row is just down the street.
Seems "relatively" safe, have not been too worried when women employees have stayed there.
