Ohio EPA fines landfill $1.05 million dollars
Thanks to the Democratic OEPA something is being done about the stinking landfill just north of me.
I'm betting that Republic Waste Services will be coughing up even more money because they will never put
out that fire. Keep up the good work, Gov. Ted and company.

EAST SPARTA – The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency announced an agreement with Countywide Recycling & Disposal Facility at East Sparta Wednesday, in which the landfill will pay more than $1 million in fines and follow strict orders to abate its odor issue and stop its underground fires.

Countywide’s parent company, Republic Waste Services, has 60 days to submit a plan to snuff out underground fires at the landfill. The plan must be approved by the OEPA.

Countywide also must revise its odor control plan, assess the landfill’s integrity and perform weekly air quality sampling.

In all, Republic will pay $1,050,000 in fines, $250,000 of which will be used to created a Community Benefit Project Fund.

1. so, do they think if they drag it out long enough in court, they won't have to pay?
I dont understand the logic of getting hit with the expense, either in terms of money or public relations.

2. It's my understanding the $1.02 million dollar deal has been made
The problem area will be permanently closed and the company must come up with a solution for putting out the fires. I think OEPA will be monitoring things closely. This was never done before. Taft's OEPA just rubber stamped everthing for companies.

MEANTIME: workers just found a body at the landfill

EAST SPARTA – Workers at Countywide Recycling and Disposal Facility on Gracemont St. SW, East Sparta, discovered the body of a black man while using equipment to push through debris at about 7:15 this morning.
The man is believed to be from the Canton area and was carrying identification, according to Stark County Sheriff Tim Swanson, whose department is investigating.
The sheriff’s office will release the man’s name as soon as deputies contact his family, according to a press release. Swanson indicated the man might have been sleeping in a trash bin that was emptied and taken to the landfill.
Stark County Coroner Dr. P.S. Murthy will rule on the cause of death.
