The New Molly Ivins Bio

Lloyd Grove's review of the new Molly Ivins biography ("Molly Ivins, A Rebel Life" by Bill Minutaglio and W. Michael Smith) is in today's NYT Times Book Review (12/27/09). I thought I'd favor you with the first paragraph:

"What fearful fun Molly Ivins would have had with Glenn Beck, the birthers, Sarah Palin, Representative Joe ('You lie!')Wilson and of course, Gov. Rick Perry---he of the secessionist aspirations and wonderful hair. And how pained she would be, while never losing hope, as she showered President Obama with tough love over his policies in Afghanistan and Iraq, and his difference-splitting diffidence on health care reform."

An absolutely irreplaceable human being. I miss her terribly.......

1. me too
But I think she can still laugh and she's having a ball laughing herself silly at our "idiots" even now.

2. NY Times link to review
NY Times 12/24/09
Troublemaker

(snip)
Ivins grew especially close (possibly as a lover) to the Democratic state comptroller Bob Bullock, the most skillful power broker in Texas, a gun-toting, whip-smart manic-depressive who shared her weakness for hard drinking. As Ivins’s barroom mentor, Bullock bequeathed her a precious perspective on the inner workings of state politics and government. Decades later, as lieutenant governor, Bullock played a similar role (minus the sexual tension and alcohol) with Ivins’s nemesis, George W.

Molly and Bob Bullock! I had no idea.
:wow:

3. Me Either!

God, what I wouldn't give to have been in on some of those whiskey-infused camping discussions.

Thanks for providing the link......

4. Toast to those better days...and those to come
I've been meaning to pick up this book, but have missed every opportunity to get to an event where the authors were signing. :(

:toast: to one of the finest Texan writers there ever was. We were lucky to have ya Molly!

7. I think about Molly often
I miss her greatly. I think our country is much less great without her.

11. Book TV video of this book.
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 12:27 AM by onestepforward
I saw most of this yesterday and it was very interesting! The authors discuss the book and offer additional stories of Molly that are not in the book. It is a long video (1 1/2 hours.) It made me miss Molly all the more!

12. Thank you for the interview link!
I got the book for Christmas. Haven't started it yet.

I still remember the last time I saw Molly in November of 2006. She was very, very ill but she was still telling her wonderful stories. She kept living her life to the fullest all the way to the end. On her terms.

13. You're welcome!
I'm so glad that you had a chance to met with her! I can't say enough about Molly. She's a treasured soul and I so miss her viewpoint and humor. Molly and Ann will always be my top two yellow roses of Texas. :)
