Quote of the Week
"We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community...Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own." Cesar Chavez

Rant of the Day
There are 2, count 'em, 2 rants this week with the kernels of a third contained within. The first concerns the issue of health care for Virginians. Seems that, if you've been following the press lately, health care providers are responsible for a huge chunk of the rise in health care costs. The cause? Their own inattention to detail and short-cutting. I mean why shouldn't they? Think about it - you get to spend less money on hospital maintenance (a non-billable expense) which, in turn, makes existing patients sicker (a billable event). Funny thing is that it also kills patients. Now, it would seem self-evident that the industry would recognize the error of their ways. Not, as the Brits say, bloody likely. Let me make a prediction here... We're going to see the traditional rhetoric from health care conglomerates and politicians about making changes and then we will see no change in the spiraling costs of health care. In addition, we will see no additional legal or regulatory accountability in the health care industry. Why? Follow the money. It's business as usual in the business and political worlds. So, we'll hear talk about how medical providers are VOLUNTARILY going to kill and bankrupt fewer people and the government/politicians will do nothing. Pathetic. This issue is an opportunity for the grassroots to do 2 things - Raise awareness of health care issues and FOLLOW THE MONEY in politics all the way down to how political wallets are linked to the votes the cast and the policies they support.

Context is king. After taking a vacation outside the beltway (Central NY), I'm struck by how few of the issues are on the radar. It got me thinking again about how we need to get people who don't live for politics into a mindset where they see community activism as an imperative.

I'm very interested right now in the links between union labor and economic justice. I'm waiting to see what comes out of the Chicago labor meetings.

Ex-felons rights. We're in preliminary talks with the Advancement Project about worker on restoration of felon voting rights in Virginia. If you have an interest in the topic, call or visit these folks. More later.
