Valedictorian slams her school's decision to award Vic Toews an honorary degree
WINNIPEG - There was an uncomfortable moment Sunday at a convocation ceremony for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews when the valedictorian slammed her school for awarding the minister an honorary degree.

Erin Larson didn't name Toews specifically, but told the audience she wasn't proud to be sharing the stage with this year's recipient of an honorary doctor of laws from the University of Winnipeg.

The protesters argued Toews didn't deserve the honour because of his opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion, as well as other issues.

One person in the audience booed Larson, but McGregor says she received a standing ovation at the end of her speech.

1. Manitobans have spunk.
I love 'em .... even though they do call SK 'the gap'. Good for Ms Larson!

2. ah, c'mon
At least it wasn't http://www.garrybreitkreuz.com/ ;)

Good for her. And who gives a crap how many of the other "entitled" (to quote one of the commenters at the WFP site) disagreed with her? In a liberal democracy, it's equality rights of individuals that are supposed to count, not the opinions of assholes.

3. The weird thing
We (the U of W) don;t even have a Law faculty. I think it was just schmoozing on Axworthy's part... maybe the new Richardson College on Portage is over budget and he needs some way to squeeze money out of the Feds.

5. Wow, that's fascinating....
putting aside the Toews angle for a bit, this is a piece of our history of which I was not at all aware until reading this. The CPR "travel debt" is not that far from the head tax that was levied upon the Chinese, imo.

As to Toews, well, I can't wait to hear him explain why what happened to his family is different than what should happen to the Tamils.

6. My suspicions...
Like all religions kooks, Vic the Slick would just refer us to the Bible for our answer.
