Have you seen this issue (June/July) of Mother Earth News?
Pages 16 & 17 of the June/July Issue of Mother Earth News.

Mother Earth News has an online Community Forum where subscribers can share photos.
A few months ago, I uploaded some photos of our place in Arkansas. Last month, they called and asked permission to publish two in their magazine.

These are the two they chose.

Oddly enough, I never cared for either of these photos.
The colors are nice in the first, but the butterfly is flying in the wrong direction (can't see the eyes), and the vegetable shot just seemed "common" to me. But I chose not to argue with their photo editor.

A word of caution:
I asked the editor if he wanted me to send a "permission to publish" release for the photos, and he informed me that I gave up ownership of my photos when I posted them to their website, and that he was calling me as a courtesy, and to check spelling.
So be careful with your photos and the internet.

For those who don't know, Starkraven and myself moved from Minneapolis to rural Arkansas in October '06 in pursuit of sustainable, efficient living. Mother Earth News is one of our bibles.

1. Wow, are you also a professional photographer?
That butterfly shot is stunningly beautiful! And while the other is more 'common', it is very
attractive and earthy. Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't picked up a copy of the magazine yet.

4. Not a professional.
I'm just a geek with a pretty good digital camera (Nikon D200).
I learned what little I know in the DU Photography Group.
There is some REAL talent in that group.

2. Hmmmm...
I would wonder about that policy unless it's stated on their website and then I'd still question it since it is a community forum. And I agree that, while those are beautiful pics, they really didn't choose the best ones. I love the one of Starkraven walking back from the garden in the twilight the best of all. Oh, and Hydee's pics, too. :D

8. My issue has not arrived yet!
You are an inspiration. As you know, this is our first summer living here on my farm. I have spent the last 13 years just doing the horse and brome thing out here. This year, with everything still in flux with much work to do, I was late but started a small garden anyway. I am surprised how well it seems to be doing since it was late and haphazard at best. Looking at your photos and reading about what you and Starkraven have done is inspiring. I have had gardens before, very successful ones, but this is a new ballgame out here. I have much much work to do.

That last photo may not be what you think of as "common" but I smelled dirt when I looked at it. You can't get much better than that!

Send karma to my taters. They were so late that the garden guy gave them to me free and they were nasty and sprouted but they are coming up. The goats are going to love the fact that I planted 18 :), I did not expect them to all survive.

Congrats on getting your pictures published and the pat on the head by Mother. Well done!

10. Gorgeous
I'll have to get my copy out of the car - I read while waiting for my son at school and it also gives me something decent to read in waiting rooms. I occasionally will even set one free in a waiting room when I'm done with it.
