Who are your heroes?
For guitar I'd cite Julian Bream, and for melody making Ray Davies and Brian Wilson. For bass-playing, James Jamerson and Stephen Hanley.

1. John Fogerty.
He could hold his own, playing with the San Franciso guitar wizards, but his instinct was mostly to keep it simple. He embraced Country licks when it was not exactly fashionable to do so and he was hopelessly taken by that old Southern Swamp Romance. He was an elegant throwback in a complicated time--prolly still is.

His anti-war stance toward the First and Second Viet Nams also endears him to me, and I think it was his idea to send a boatload of supplies a couple of times each week to the American Indians who were occupying Alcatraz back in the 70s. Hell, I believe the boy's a Democrat!

My favorite songwriters are Andy Partridge, Martin Newell, Brian Wilson, John Lennon, Julian Cope and Matthew Sweet.

My favorite musicians are Jonny Greenwood, Dave Gregory, the duo of Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd, and guys like Page and even some old electric Blues players like Albert Collins.

9. Pretty Easy For Me
On Piano: My sine qua non is Monk. While i always admired Tyner and Peterson, Monk was THE man.

On Guitar: Satriani is my main man. While i was obviously influenced by others before he came around, his incorporation of noise and modality in rock guitar flipped me out. It's sophisticated harmonically, but still rocks.

On Bass: McCartney mostly. Listen to his Beatles work. It's always moving and there's a lot of counterpoint to the melody and guitars but still in-sync with the drums.

Songwriting: Bowie. Smart lyrics that paint pictures and mean something, while creating interesting soundscapes that always fit the mood of the song.

Production: Rupert Hine and George Martin. Everything is all so present and clean, but there's still tons going on. Lots of air.
