Big plans for revived Bomb Comp at Barksdale

A bigger and bolder bomber crew competition than announced recently by 8th Air Force will take place at Barksdale Air Force Base next year.

And under Global Strike Command, it will likely have a new name and a larger cast of participants, the new command’s leader and his representatives say.

For one thing, it also will involve the missile wings and bases that are equal partners in Global Strike with the bombers people in and around Shreveport are used to seeing. And it could have an international flavor — if not this year, then in future renderings.

“We’re very excited about hosting the formal ceremonies of the first-ever Global Strike bomb and missile competition here at Barksdale and in the Shreveport-Bossier community,” said Lt. Gen. Frank Klotz, commander of the Air Force’s newest component, headquartered at Barksdale. “It will not only be the first … we’re expecting it to be the largest in a long time.”

Under the initial plan, the awards ceremony and symposium would have taken place in Hoban Hall on Aug. 19. That will be pushed back, said Lt. Col. John Thomas, head of public affairs for Global Strike.
