Hi, I'm obsessed with atheism... |
|
Edited on Tue Jun-28-11 10:26 PM by amyrose2712
:hi: :hi: or so says my BF. Also, I "hate anyone that believes". Well can't say they don't annoy the fuck out of me these days. But, I am starting to feel pressure from him about my lack of belief. According to him I'm supposed to be an agnostic. And calling myself an agnostic atheist is just semantics. It is really starting to frustrate me. We keep getting into these serious arguments about lacking belief. And how saying I don't believe in god is generalizing. I know I have said this here before but it is really starting to bother me. And I am not so sure how to deal with this. This coming from someone that sent his Knights of Columbus catholic father an ad for discounted "bags of jesus"(it was an online sale of the host for communion)Any advise on how to deal with this treatment of my lack of belief. I don't think he sees the difference in the statements "I don't believe in god" and " I believe there is no god" I guess I just needed to come here to whine a bit. Not to mention my sister, who thinks I am an evil heathen that is going to burn in hell. And that "if I want to think I was created as an amoeba and changed into an animal" then that is fine, but it will lead me to hell. Or my former best friend that told me she felt as though she "failed me as a friend, because I am going to hell" and that she "didn't believe in dinosaurs anymore" Oh and don't forget the coworker that wanted to put a rosary on my desk when I told her I was going to a Marilyn Manson concert. And this is in NJ, not the bible belt. And then watching the Miss America women being asked about evolution, that was just a breaking point for me. It makes me want to scream! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Ok I'm, done. Sorry for such ramblings, I know I am not a good writer, but sometimes I just NEED to get these thoughts out. And I feel safe and comfortable to do it here. Thanks.

1. I ask them, "Isn't faith a gift from god?" They always say yes. |
|
So I say that god has not given me that gift. It's his way. They should not question god.
I guess bf, his father, your sister, fbf, cw, and Miss America, have not shown you any manifestations of the holy one, supreme lord of the universe, and its suburbs. Tell them you know they're putting you on, and to stop it and be serious.
Just kidding :)

4. Time to tell him what's going on in your head is none of his business |

and clam up.
If he won't move on, dump him.
Really.

7. Well, I'm in this thing 16 years... |
|
so I hope it's just a communication issue. Funny, he used to be angry about religion too but I think he had become one of the"people can believe what they want and why should you care people" But I just don't agree. The idea itself is inherently exclusive (or excluding) and causes more harm than good.

Might there be something else going on, an underlying 'disconnect,' or somesuch? Sorry about all the others, too. You attract them? Or discuss/raise the matter often?

...just have to "agree to disagree" about your (ir)religious opinions. That has worked for many couples (one of the most famous being the atheist Thomas Edison and his second wife Mina, a devout Xian - after an epic blow-up when she tried to convert him, they agreed to disagree and lived happily for many years.)
However, I am the last person to be giving relationship advice. I was divorced back around the 15th century and never re-married.
I can only sympathize about your other asshat relatives. I am from the Bible Belt and get similar snark every time I go back to visit. Fortunately, I hitch-hiked to Los Angeles as an infant and only go back to visit occasionally.
Ok I'm, done. Sorry for such ramblings, I know I am not a good writer, but sometimes I just NEED to get these thoughts out. And I feel safe and comfortable to do it here. Thanks.
Thank YOU. That's a high compliment for this bunch of curmudgeons.

9. Yeah, I think you are correct... |
|
mostly I think it is mostly "semantics" as he says. He tends to let things roll off his back a little easier than I. Then again he is 5 years older, seems that 5 years ago, he was full of piss and vinegar on the issue. So, maybe in 5 years I won't be so annoyed with religion. Sometime I think just being a woman will give you a different perspective to the religious conversation.
Thank YOU. That's a high compliment for this bunch of curmudgeons.
Shit, this is where I always come when in need of a little sanity and reason.

10. My GF does similar crap |
|
Perhaps you and I should date. :-)
After our last argument I thought, "Why do I take this abuse?"
We've only been at it 3 years. I'm at a breaking point. We need an atheists dating service!

Seconded!
Even the most irreligious chicks apparently draw the line at "not believing in god".
