just finished Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon.... |

I've picked it up many times, then put it back on the shelf because I'm usually not a fan of detective novel SF fusion or of most serialized character novels, and Altered Carbon has both prejudices running against it. Serialized detective SF fusion generally repels me from across the bookstore! However, I really enjoyed this book and I'm going for the sequel this afternoon. Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs character manages to avoid most of the bad film noir cliches that those sorts of novels are often filled with, and the SF is top notch fiction. The character has an interesting background-- again, avoiding the usual Sam Spade style gumshoe cliches. Anyway, I recommend it.

I actually like SF/Detective mixes when done well. After all Asimov himself did a good job with the Robot novels :)
And the recent "Down those Dark Spaceways" anthology had some real gems of short stories based on the SF/Detective mix.
