Do I qualify? (Born in 1962)
I believe that birth rates returned to prewar levels in 1963, so in the strictest sense I qualify. On the other hand, I sucked rocks massively at Trivial Pursuit's Baby Boomer edition, so I am inclined to conclude that whatever the demographers may say, "baby boomer" in cultural terms means "born in the '50s." What say you?

(Mind you, I feel welcome regardless. Just trying to nail down the dates.)

1. Welcome! According to this website

http://www.aginghipsters.com/, Baby Boomers are technically those born in 1946 through 1964 so you do squeak in! :D

To me, it's more a state of mind or phase of life as far as this group is concerned. Although, I have to admit, there are times I don't even feel a part of this generation and I was born in 1955. But Vietnam defined much of this generation and the war ended while I was a senior in high school. By the time I got to college, the protests and such were over and I was too self-absorbed as a high school student to get involved in any of that, especially since I was still under the cloud of my Republican parents (who managed to find ways to justify the national guard killing of four students at Kent State University.)

Twenty years is a long time period to define a generation. Some Boomers are just now starting their families while my four are all young adults. Some have already retired while I just started a new career. But it's that diversity of our group that I'm looking forward to! Glad to have you!

im so 70s i kind of consider us the blank generation. we just wanted to party and be left alone. live and let live. not militant, not hippies. pretty much like the 70s show without the jokes.

3. late boomers
I'm a 1959 baby and I do identify some with older Boomers. But, I think we're a seperate subset, old enough to remember Vietnam, too young to have worried about being drafted there.

and while I do consider myself a boomer by the timeline, I totally agree with you. We weren't politically aware at all and we weren't hippies although we still wore some of the clothes. It was all about partying, only about partying. In fact, drug use among teenagers was at its highest peak ever in '78, the year I graduated. That 70's Show was us. (We had plenty of good jokes though. I remember laughing all night, many a night.....oh, I guess it could have been the acid.)

4. I don't agree with what the demographers say. My coming of age
was not the Viet Nam war (I was five at the height of the protests in 1968). I graduated high school the year Reagan was inaugurated. I identify more with Gen X than the baby boomers.

5. No, I wouldn't say you're a boomer. The boomers, in everyday
language is referring to those born 1945 through the late 1950's.

and I do consider myself a "boomer." The last year for baby boomers was 1964 so you are a boomer. We are just late boomers. I don't remember anything at all about the 50's while older boomers do so its like two different generations of boomers.

Edit--boomers is anyone born from 1946 (the year after the war ended) to 1964).

12. I agree with the two different generations
of boomers. There are distinct differences between early boomers and late boomers. Many early boomers like myself were more beat than hip. I actually wasn't aware, until I read this thread, that the boomer generation covered so many years. I always was led to believe it was the soldiers returning home from the European war that started the boom and that it only lasted a few years. Oh well, you learn something new everyday.

8. I was born in 1964 and have definite boomer tendencies.
My father was born in 1922, my mother in 1931. She raised me on WWII MGM musicals. My dad was a WWII vet. Both my parents were hawkish Republicans in Vietnam.

I have two sisters, one born in 1953 and the other in 1957. They raised me on Joan Baez and the Beatles. I brought Bookends into music class to share "America" with my fellow 5th graders (who just didn't get it).

I also had my child when I was 18 in 1982. All the other parents I met were boomers, and so most of my friends were boomers.

On the other hand, my best friend while growing up had early boomer parents. My first political memory is Nixon's resignation. The Partridge Family, Welcome Back Kotter, and Charlie's Angels shaped me, along with The Police and The Go-Gos. And I grew up with computers.

So I feel like I have the best of both worlds, strattling generations.
