Story on CBS Sunday Morning about Kodachrome.
A photographer using some said that what made it different from digital was that the great color was in the film and didn't have to be created in post-processing. However, when they interviewed the people at Dwayne's, they said that the great color came from the interaction of the film and the special chemicals in the processing. So you're still waiting for the post-processing, whether chemical or Photoshop.
Personally, I'm grateful for digital.

1. Film is good but
I wonder how many great photos were lost because some never had the money for film and all its cost? With digital once you have the camera anyone can afford to learn by trial and error. They can also learn what their camera and each different lens sees while getting instant feedback must faster. I would hate to see film go away completely because it has its place and is still important. Besides film is a great way to put your knowledge to use and learn discipline. You just aren't going to take a few hundred shots and hope you got a few good ones when you have to pay for each shot. Then there are those that worked developing film that won't suffer from lung diseases after breathing in the chemicals for decades. I have met a couple people that suffer from chemical induced reduced lung function from developing film.

If I had young kids I would be putting a camera in their hands at a younger age with digital than I would of film. I've let kids as young as 3 yrs use mine while I was there to keep an eye on them. Kids especially love the instant feedback. I have a little compact now that I keep in my case partly just to let little hands use since it is so much lighter.

2. I'm seeing kids 5-6 years old taking photos with
their parent's iPhones. My niece might become the recipient of an old camera of mine. I let her take a few images last year and I was impressed with her sense of composition.

I think camera phones will be a great nursery for the next generation of photographers.

5. You're so right, CC.
If we didn't have digital, I NEVER would have taken up photography. I didn't have the time nor the money to learn all the ins and outs, so I'm sure I would have been stuck with my little point & shoot film camera until the end of my days, taking snapshots of birthdays and holidays.

I think digital photography is one of the best inventions ever, and personally I really enjoy the post-processing on the computer. I'm getting skillful enough now that I don't need to do much, but it's still fun to be able to tweak the colors and so on to MY satisfaction, not the way some lab would do it.

3. Technically it's not post-processing. It's just processing.
I like film.
