Hawks in the Hood - not everyone is happy about it
I watched a large hawk, possibly a red-tail, sitting in a tree across the street from my house the other morning. A smaller hawk joined it, then flew away. Then a blue jay landed on a nearby branch. I thought it was taking a big risk getting that close. Then the jay flew into the hawk, attacking it and flew off. Naturally, I didn't have a camera handy for that.

This morning while walking the pooches across the street, I watched 2 crows in flight attacking a smallish hawk overhead. The hawk's feathers snowed down around us but he seemed to escape major damage as he flew off.

1. I've heard of smaller birds mobbing raptors
They usually do it in groups though. Never heard of a single bird taking on a hawk like that before.

3. I thought I heard a red-tailed hawk's cry the other morning
I looked out the window to watch all of the birds at the feeders fly away. Then in came a Blue Jay - just one....that faker :-). He had all the bird seed to himself for quite a while.

4. I think the Republicans should use a blue jay instead of an elephant as their mascot
It bullies smaller birds in order to grab more than its fair share at the bird feeder and obtains its food through deceit (like the example you just gave). Plus its initials are BJ, which ties in nicely to Republican sex scandals.

7. I often see them chasing crows but this was
a first for me. Of course, I see so many more crows than hawks.
