OK, a post about porn again
Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 01:35 AM by ccbombs
Sorry but I can't help myself. This is just too ironic to pass up.

As I'm sure many of you know, a porn star and her producer were apparently invited to a huge Republican fundraiser this week. Mary Carey and her wealthy male porn producer friend were positively gushing about the Pukes and what a boon the porn industry could be to them.

Now, I'm a bit perplexed. Because haven't we all told repeatedly that pornographers are the vanguard of our civil liberties and free speech. Why, supposedly, they are the protectors of our very reproductive freedom. So we are NEVER to criticize them because religious fundamentalists and other enemies of free speech are monitoring this and other liberal sites at all times, in the hopes that they will find something to justify their cause.

This leads me to wonder how it is that members of said industry could possibly align themselves with the people responsible for the Patriot Act and parental notification laws. Hmmmm.... 'Cuz I thought pornographers are supposed to be "sitting on the razor's edge of the First Amendment". Least that's what someone told me. Apparently some of them didn't get that memo...

1. Tax cuts tax cuts tax cuts
That's what is overriding all concern for civil liberties.

Carey doesn't give a rip that the GOP has become home to every picklefaced enemy of erotica. They gave her TAX CUTS. People living in trailers with tires on the roof in tornado alley don't give a rip that the GOP is trying to wreck everything good about this country, because they (think they) got a TAX CUT from them.

Now look at the Democrats. They're great on civil liberties but they're not offering SQUAT on the economy except slightly higher taxes on rich people and balancing the budget.

That doesn't sell to the folks in the trailers and it doesn't sell to somebody like Carey who's got a lot of money.

2. Republicans create cheaper labor markets.
More desperate women (and men) make for more wannabe porn stars. They talk the talk when it comes to "decency" and "censorship" but behind the scenes they're gung-ho over any business, especially pornography.

4. My apologies
I'm thinking now that I should have posted this at Women's Rights and Issues. It would have been more appropriate there.

But you guys are getting exactly what I'm talking about. Defenders of porn like to portray the issue as these poor artists expressing their erotic creativity who are being attacked by mean close-minded people. Balderdash. They are a business selling a commodity (in this case sexual depictions of human beings) whose main concern is profit, profit, and more profit, no different from the company I work for that sells computer chips.

Really though, I am tickled by Mary Carey going to the * event. I want it publicized far and wide. Family-values voters need to see true Republican values in action. And the pro-porn progressives need to see how readily that industry will sell out civil liberties for a few extra bucks.
