this Couric thing is making me nuts |
|
If I see one more poster calling her a bitch my head may explode. She's a hack...why is it so fucking difficult for people to say that instead of calling her a gender slur? *sigh*

1. Because gender slurs are easy in our culture. |
|
:(
Thinking in gender neutral terms seems to be difficult, especially for people who are acustomed to using sexist insults as a matter of habit.
I think it's a combination of apathy and laziness. They don't care, and so they don't bother.

2. While people do get offended by men in positions they're not qualified for |
|
When it's a woman they go ballistic! She's not good enough for the job, and a lowly vagina-possesser to boot!! And then it goes back to that predicament where one incompetent woman reflects on all women while men are still judged as individuals. I predict that Couric will be replaced at her anchor job in the near future by a man. Her low ratings and crappy interviewing style will be used to justify keeping all women out of that spot for years to come.
Katie Couric may have been a bad choice for CBS anchor and 60 minutes. But Anderson Cooper doesn't seem very fitting for 60 minutes either, certainly not in comparison to some of his venerated predecessors.
I honestly believe that the day women have acheived full equality will be when individual women can be mediocre and even *gasp!* fail at things without having to worry about letting down her entire gender.

3. those limited in vocabulary illustrate that fact by the words they choose to use |
|
they call her a 13itch because they didn't pay attention in grammar class. Thus, they have learned to live with what they can't rise above and inflict their shortcomings on those who have a robust vocabulary.

4. Indoctrinated language I guess |
|
America loves it's gender insults. My daughter, (I think I've posted this before) gets very angry at the words bitch, ho, slut, etc. She would rather use--or be called-- a genital body part (something she says she's proud of having) than "a dog". She developed this attitude in her years in the military, and I tend to agree with her. If we need to use gender insults genitalia seem to be a catch all, twat, dick, prick, c***(I think that last one is banned here)etc.
BUT women as always bear most of the insult burden of genital insults, since our genitalia has been considered "dirty" for a couple of thousand years now.
Interesting, how "Dawg" became a part of street language meaning buddy or friend---male in origin, but I've heard females use it-- but "bitch" means what it always has meant, and continues to animalize women. It's used to "feminize" men or give them lower status when directed toward them. Attempts to reclaim the word by feminists have had limited success.

|
when I read an OP that compared Katie to Coulter, I had to stop. I refuse to read Part II.
So any woman who doesn't follow the Dem Boys rules is now a 'Coulter?'
Un f*cking believable.
Men really do hate women....and it's so damn socially acceptable. Sigh Sigh Sigh.

No other group is granted that privilege.

7. Many men will use every opportunity they get to demonize women, |
|
Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 06:35 AM by BlueIris
particularly when a woman is at least financially powerful. These are the types that mentally demonize all women, all the time, of course. They leap at the chance to whip out the "bitch" label, especially for rich female professionals, any time it could be even marginally socially acceptable (among other sexists anyway) to do so--like when a female media figure is criticizing a popular Democratic candidate for president on a progressive website. Such men make up all too much of this website still.

8. I had to take a break yesterday... |
|
I couldn't look at it anymore. Just a simple search of GD for the last 24 hours was enough to make me want to be somewhere else today too. If it didn't mean the sexists would win...I would go down in flames over this whole mess.
And of course, not one word of censure to any of the sexist pigs from the mods or admins. *sigh* Color me stunned...NOT.

9. Do you think bringing something that noticeable up to the mgmt |
|
here would make a difference? Sometimes these things can be overwhelming -- and very damned persuasive -- when shown en masse like that. Think about it, if you would.

10. I am glad to see I am not alone on this. |

Most of the women they attack have so many qualities worthy of mocking. But it all always comes down to a gender slur. Makes DU look stupid. :(
