Bush, Hitler, and histroy. |
|
In WW II Hitler split his army in the Soviet Union and sent a large force to capture the city of Stalingrad instead of by passing the city and pushing on towards the vital oil fields in the Caucasus. Long story short Hitler's 6th army wound up be trapped by the Soviet forces who surrounded the city. Hitler refused to order his army to make break out to the rear with support coming from the east. When he finally ordered the "break out" it was too little to late and of the 250,000 troops of the German 6th Army less then 5,000 every made it back to German.
All along Hitler's generals and advisors tried to make him see how dire the situation was and that he had to get the troops out. Hitler refused to listen to the advice and found some people who told him what he wanted to hear and this resulted in the beginning of the end for Hitler and German.
Now the # of dead Americans from Iraq* will not begin to approach the # of dead germans & soviets from the battle of Stalingrad (2 million) but to me it seems that there are many similarities from bush's refusal to listen to the I.S.G. report, not listening to the Generals who told him that he needed more troops and planning, and his refusal now to pull out of a losing situation in Iraq. Also not unlike Hitler bush is seeking out people who will tell him what he wants to hear.
Hitler and bush both refused to listen to the facts and the deadly results are now part of the world's history.
Just thoughts
* Iraqi dead now # 650,000 with a million refugees

1. Some of the generals are just as blind as Hitler this time around |
|
The Pentagon seems to support sending more troops in and doesn't seem happy with the idea of accepting a timetable for getting out.

4. In the end, there may be a very striking similarity. |

It is funny, but I think there is a weird symetry to the fact the Hitler tried to promote that dumb german general to field marshall - and all those medal of freedoms he seems to give out so freely.
Your analysis is really good.

approach the number of. . ." True, but America's real sacrifice with re: to Iraq might well be the hundreds of billions of dollars that are being spent on the war. Hitler could afford the human casualties more than the US can afford the extra debt at this point.

6. It is amazing to me how the truly insane rise to such lofty political and....... |

military power. You would think that 'WE' would eventually know better then to let it happen over and over again. There are ALWAYS plenty of 'YES MEN AND WOMEN' to act as henchmen or enablers to these vile excuses of humanity.

7. Yes. There are disturbing parallels. |
|
We have long supply lines, stretching across increasingly hostile territory. What happens if that supply line is cut?
Couldn't happen? Maybe...
What if the airports are shut down, surrounded by people with lots of cheap, shoulder-fired surface to air missiles? Couldn't happen? Maybe...
We depend on being able to expend massive amounts of munitions. What happens if supply interdiction means we can't? What happens to companies or battalions that are isolated?
Let's hope we're both wrong.

8. I don't see the U.S. forces being cut off like the Germans but |
|
I do see that having 150,000 foreign troops in a Country of 25,000,000 being very problematic.
I just talked to a soldier who just got back and his stories were horrific ..... go for a ride and you almost always take fire ... which did not get through the armor but he said was mentally very taxing ...... mortar fire 2 to 3 times a week so they could not sleep ..... his vehicle was hit with an IED (minor wounds all around he had cracked ribs) ..... he saw an American shot dead right outside the Green Zone.
God damn bush really has opened the gates of hell.

9. Hitler was doomed the moment he launched "Operation Barbarossa". |

Invading a country without really thinking it through properly...sounds so familiar, doesn't it?

10. If you get a chance watch the movie "Stalingrad" |
|
It was done in Germany and really showed what that war was like ..... opening scene showed a medal ceremony and a German sergeant was told unless he fixed up his uniform he would not get a medal .... he asked if they were going to Russia and if so he did not need the medal and then laughed.
last scene showed the freezing and surrounded troops get iron crosses dropped into them.
"medals of freedom?"
