YouTube refuses Lieberman request
YouTube refuses Lieberman request
Published on May 19, 2008

Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) made the request in a letter to Eric Schmidt, the chairman of the board and chief executive officer at Google, in which he said that YouTube “unwittingly, permits Islamist terrorist groups to maintain an active, pervasive and amplified voice despite military setbacks or successful operations by the law enforcement and intelligence communities.”

Lieberman asked the company not only to remove existing content but also identify changes that Google plans to make to YouTube’s community guidelines and explain how it plans to enforce the guidelines. Lieberman said removing such content should be “a straightforward task since so many of the Islamist terrorist organizations brand their material with logos or icons identifying their provenance.”

However, YouTube in a response this afternoon, said taking those actions was not so simple and refused to remove all videos mentioning or featuring these groups without consideration of whether the videos were legal, nonviolent or non-hate speech videos.

“While we respect and understand his views, YouTube encourages free speech and defends everyone's right to express unpopular points of view,” the company said. “We believe that YouTube is a richer and more relevant platform for users precisely because it hosts a diverse range of views, and rather than stifle debate, we allow our users to view all acceptable content and make up their own minds.”

Lieberman said removing such content should be “a straightforward task since so many of the Islamist terrorist organizations brand their material with logos or icons identifying their provenance.”

Think about what he's suggesting here. First, Google should have image-recognition software which scans all uploaded videos for "logos or icons". Second, they should use this to automatically search for a list of logos supplied by the government (you can't expect Google to keep tabs on all "terrorist groups" unaided). Third, they should have some mechanism for reviewing matching videos and removing them: perhaps by automatically alerting a spook and letting the latter take the decision? Leaving aside the fact that the image recognition is technically harder than he suggests, this sounds like groundwork for a way for the US government to exercise editorial control over youtube, blocking any "branded" material they don't like. How long before they want to add face and voice recognition to this?

16. Since it many of them who voted for him were Repukes , I'm sure
they are thrilled. The turncoat Dem party leaders who supported him after the primary - some are regretting their actions. The others - well, they will be up for reelection soon and will find out that we the people were not happy with their actions.

13. I've seen them before...
LiveLeak has a few of them, too. Usually long-distance shots of IEDs or car bombs going off. There's a particularly nasty one about snipers that leaves little to the imagination.

What Joe fails to realize is, by the time they make it to YouTube, most of the intended audience for these clips has likely already seen them. They get distributed by e-mail and other websites. YouTube is not the target media for these clips. What a maroon.

18. It is great to see Neocon-Fascist Lieberman get defeated.
He is truly one of the most evil men in the US government, along with Bush, Cheney and McCain.
