1. Yes. Brennan's in downtown Houston.
I think they just said it burned to the ground...or burning to the ground. Sad.

4. 2 people injured, one of them a TODDLER...
This sucks...and the fire is still raging. The weather is only going to get worse, which makes it tough for them to fight the fire. It could spread to other buildings. This really sucks. :(

7. Yes, I'm kind of worried right now...

Rick Sanchez on CNN is in La Porte. That is just 15 minutes west of my parents' house in Baytown. They are at my aunt's house in Pasadena, but the CNN guy just said Baytown is getting nailed right now. And this is not the worst of it. Sanchez is getting 60 mph winds in La Porte and it's tearing buildings apart. The CNN guy said "tack on another 40 mph and that's what you'll be dealing with in a couple of hours." :(

When I was at Brennan's the last time, the waiter asked me out. Had a great time.

9. Is your parents' house in the area that might be without power for three weeks?

11. Yes...
The CNN reporter that's in Baytown is at the farthest north part of town on I-10. My parents live on the other side of town, 20 minutes away. We are closer to La Porte than we are to San Jacinto Mall/I-10. We have Cedar Bayou 2 minutes down the road from us. Cedar Bayou feeds directly into the Houston Ship Channel, which as you may know is part of Galveston Bay/Gulf of Mexico. We are close enough to the water to take a 5 minute drive to the boat ramps to put our boat in. And it's northeast of Galveston. The northeast part of a hurricane is where the worst storm surge happens. I'm glad my parents left at least. They were telling me yesterday that they weren't going to leave, but the video footage from earlier today showing Galveston already flooded with no wind or rain convinced them to get the hell out of dodge. My aunts house in Pasadena is around 20 minutes west further inland, but they will surely lose power.

16. Thank you...
I am in Midland so it does not affect me. But I can say this. I just bought a car last weekend, and one of the things we were thinking of doing was getting it in Houston. I'm sure glad I just paid the $500 destination fee to get it to Midland instead of buying a car in another city, then having it potentially ruined by a hurricane. The other good thing is my parents' house is completely paid off and both my sister and I have graduated from college. If the house is ruined, they will just move. My mom works in The Woodlands (northwest of Houston) and has to carpool 3 hours per day roundtrip. My dad works in La Porte, so that's one of the main reasons they have stayed in Baytown. They've had that house since I was 6 months old (I was born in November of '85). I'm concerned about my grandma's house too. My mom evacuated her on Thursday. She lives in League City, which is around 30 minutes south of Baytown, basically on the way to Galveston. It's right by Seabrook, which is completely under water at this point. Her and my grandpa don't really have much income (he is in a nursing home so they evacuated him) so I am not sure what would happen if their house is ruined. I guess she could live with my parents.

17. Brennan's Restaurant destroyed by fire- Houston Chronicle
Three people were severely injured and a Houston culinary landmark was left in ashes early Saturday by a fire that erupted as Hurricane Ike began to barrel into town.

Brennan's Restaurant, a Midtown institution famous for its turtle soup and bananas foster and a time-honored eatery among local society, was ruined by the blaze. A 45-year-old man and his 4-year-old daughter, along with a third man who was not related to them, were taking refuge from the storm inside the brick structure.

The father and daughter were taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center with burn injuries, Assistant Fire Chief Omero Longoria said. Both were listed in critical condition early today, a hospital spokesperson said. The other man was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition.
