2. This poll is set up oddly. My father, uncle, two aunts and one grandfather served in the military.

The other grandfather couldn't serve in WWII because of a bad back, so he worked at the local VA hospital, which was pretty bad in itself. I also have a cousin in the military.

I did, my brother did, my father and uncles did, my grandfathers, g-grandfathers, and so on, back to the Revolution (on both sides - patriots and loyalists) . . . and then farther back than that.

20. Like several here, I find that the categories are drawn too narrowly.

My husband served in the military, as did my paternal grandfather, my father and my brother. I have several cousins who served in Vietnam, a nephew who served several tours in Afghanistan, and one of my daughter-in-law's sisters served a tour in Iraq. The other sister is married to a career military man.

I myself served as a Peace Corps Volunteer as a new college graduate, very wet behind the ears, in the 60s, i.e., many moons ago. I strongly support national service of some sort for every single US citizen who is not physically or mentally incapacitated, especially service that removes individuals from their familiar or parochial settings so that they can see that there is much more to the world than they may have learned while they were growing up ... and that what they did learn about that world was not always the truth.

Father during Korean War. Brothers during Vietnam but they were not sent there......thank gods. My son served his first tour in Iraq and will likely be going to Afghanistan next. I didn't want him to serve, btw......and tried to talk him out of enlisting, but he's an adult and he made a conscious choice so, being a mom first and foremost, he has my support - complete and unconditional.

And I keep on my desk the WWI compass that belonged to one of the leaders from my old Scout troop, unopened and in its little cloth bag. My old best friend's brother was in the Army. My long-time coworker's nephew, who I first met when he was a few days old, is deploying to Afghanistan in April or May, after finishing his tour of duty in Iraq (he's a Marine).

It's not just relatives, but also friends and role models who served in the military that count.

After a brief foray into business, Dad went back into the Army and retired in the 1970s. Before that generation, I have heard of relatives whp were in the Austrian cavalry. My cousins of my generation whose families had stayed in the old country were in the Red Army. And I have a cousin on a submarine.

Niece served 4 tours in Iraq. She had planned on being a lifer, but couldn't take it anymore. She left the army after 18 years, but join the National Guard. My step-son just joined the Army. Nephew just joined the National Guard. My uncle was wounded in World War II. My great grandfather was a drummer boy in the Union Army and played the drums as they marched into battle.
