If I step in shit prior to visiting your house, I will wipe my feet. Well, DU is our house, and ... |

the fact that you stumbled across some bit of insanity on FoxNews, World Net Daily, etc; does not mean that you need to track it into our living room. Please, wipe your fucking feet.

22. Damn! Is this thread in a secret code? |
|
I keep reading and rereading and still only have the vaguest of ideas as to what it is about. Is this a follow-up thread? Has the offending action been deleted? Or is this the beginning of my aged demise?

...there are members here who aren't interested in what the opposition is thinking. There are also those that already know, as their race, sex, gender and/or social class is frequently slurred by them.

what the opposition is thinking then I'll go directly to the source. I don't need to see it on DU. I can do my own opposition research.
Links to FOX, World Net Daily, Drudge don't belong here. This site is for Democratic and progressive opinions.

Wholeheartedly, enthusiastically agree...! I wish we could reach a concensus w/the admins. and mods. banning that tripe once and for all. I absolutely abhor seeing it here.
My theory is, some of du's closet right-wingers get some sort of sick thrill on bringing it here and watching people get upset about it.

16. Sorry. I don't think telling others what they do or don't "need" to address here runs |
|
counter to everything I believe in, and setting some kind of litmus test for what topics are or aren't okay to broach here doesn't do anyone any favors. You don't want to read a particular discussion, don't read it. But I don't need some DUer in an Ari Fleischer mask telling me to "watch what I say".

We can't accept the bad news that comes from the bad side of the democratic party if that bad news happens to be on a right wing site?
what if that news is on right and left wing sites?
what are you saying, there's no bad news from the Obama admin?

29. Treading lightly in this house/thread, I see DU as a clearing house of information |
|
--- yes, part opposition research, part think-pieces, part ain't-it-awful, part cheerleading, part mobilization, et al.
* I strongly disagree with the posts that have broad brush alleged that DUers who display those sources are closet wingnuts or aren't aware of the wingnuttiness of the sources or can only find wingnut sources for supporting what they really believe.
* Most of the time the message is, look what this idiot wingnut is saying, and the O.P. makes it clear that there is no agreement with the wingnuttiness.
* Limiting everything to "approved" sources would make this an echo chamber, and since discord loves a vacuum, we would soon be ripping one another to pieces, like we don't do that already, and the bottom line is that defining "permissibility" is a totalitarian ethic, not a Democratic or democratic one.

39. I know Rahm Emanuel somehow took credit for 2006 |
|
but a lot more of it was the Al Franken Show, the Stephanie Miller Show, the Daily Show, all of which successfully made a mockery of right wing views and media, which gave a lot of us courage and a common language by which we could connect with each other. For instance I was in a community theater production of Aunti Mame at the time, and a lot of the other actors were Rotary Club members, whom I assumed were conservative, but when the child actors started singing Stephanie Miller's "lying sac of crap" song and people started laughing, then we could talk about politics, and it comes out the old guy playing the conservative Mr Babcock was a lawyer who helped author the Geneva Conventions, and having long since abandoned the GOP was frankly horrified by Bush administration policies ... and I'm sure I would never have got to talk about all that with him if not for Miller's "right wing world".
In a time of oppression, the satirists come to the fore. Let us hope the day will come when we don't need to get the truth out through humor, but until much bigger changes happen than yet, such as the repeal of the Patriot Act, we'll need to point out their absurdities.
Anyway, it's a basic form of argument: introduce the opponent to the unwanted consequences of their position -- and one of those consequences is they look utterly ridiculous to those outside their little bubble.
Certainly let's not let that happen to us by becoming too insular!

After reading all the comments. And I hate you for making me read all the comments.
I have a similar complaint to some of the talkers on America Left who don't understand what their role is. They think their role is to listen to opinions from all sides of the issue, then convince them of the strength of his/her arguments and persuade conservatives and undecideds to adopt his/her positions. No, that's not what we're accomplishing on DU, liberal websites, the few liberal talkers on radio, etc. What's happening here, painfully slow, is we're all creating a new language and more improtantly ideas that will create a liberal movement.

44. Every house is attached to a sewer, so why not label one section of DU as THE SEWER ??? |
|
And let right wing zombies write there. Whenever we felt like it we could go to 'The Sewer' section and use it as we would our houses' toilet to 'relieve' ourselves. And when we hit the "Post Message" button it would make the sound of a toilet flushing.

48. I get most of my right-wing news from DU |
|
It's a funny little thing. I know more about what Sarah Palin is doing, Fox News is saying, Glenn Beck is weeping, and Rush Limbaugh is croaking just by glancing at the topic list of GD than I ever hear on, say, facebook from Republican friends.
I don't watch cable news at all outside of the occasional Rachel Maddow clip on youtube, yet I feel as if I'm intimately familiar with every anchor, guest, and commenter who ever graced the major cable news stations.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I strongly believe a sizeable portion of Fox's audience are people on the Left addicted to being outraged by the crap it churns out every single day. It's the Howard Stern effect.
Ah well. They're fairly easy threads to skip past because they're typically well-identified.
